What One Gopher Did on Mount St. Helens—and What Later Research Found

The Mount St. Helens story began with one gopher in a small enclosure around a lupine. Later studies measured local effects of gopher mounds, not a mountain-wide transformation caused by that single day.

In 1982, researchers placed one northern pocket gopher in a small enclosure around a single lupine on Mount St. Helens’ Pumice Plain for 24 hours. The episode was a bounded experiment, not a mass release. Later studies found that gophers became part of the area’s recovery and that their mounds were associated with changes in nearby vegetation and soil—but those findings do not show that the single-day trial transformed the whole mountain.

What happened during the 24-hour experiment?

A 2024 account of the work describes a northern pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides) taken from a nearby clearcut and placed in a one-square-meter enclosure around one Lupinus lepidus plant, commonly called lupine, on the Pumice Plain. The animal was there for 24 hours. The account attributes the experiment to earlier work by Allen and MacMahon. The 2024 article recounts the episode in the context of microbial communities in recovering Mount St. Helens forests.

That scale matters. “Dropped gophers” can sound like researchers released a group of animals across the landscape; the reported setup was one animal in a small, plant-centered enclosure. The experiment offered a short, controlled look at what a gopher might do in severely disturbed ground, not a test of how an entire ecosystem would respond over decades.

How did the experiment differ from later gopher activity?

The experimental animal should not be confused with the gophers that later colonized the Pumice Plain. The U.S. Forest Service says northern pocket gophers reached the plain about 12 years after the 1980 eruption. That later arrival and the population’s subsequent activity are separate from the 1982 enclosure trial. The available accounts do not establish that the experimental gopher founded the later population.

Gophers were part of a much broader succession story. The eruption created a patchwork of conditions, and surviving organisms, seeds and other propagules, and physical structures remained across much of the affected landscape. As the USGS synthesis puts it: “Despite these profound environmental changes, important legacies of predisturbance ecosystems, including live organisms, propagules, and organic and physical structures, persisted across much of the affected landscape.” The USGS synthesis by Frederick J. Swanson and Jon J. Major describes these biological and physical legacies; gophers were one part of recovery involving many organisms and processes.

What did later field research measure?

A 2014 peer-reviewed study examined gopher activity and mound effects at the Pumice Plain, reporting observations from 2010—18 years after gopher colonization. The figures below describe that study’s site and observation period, not the whole volcano. The study, “Gopher mounds decrease nutrient cycling rates and increase adjacent vegetation in volcanic primary succession,” found:

  • Gophers were active in about 2.5% of the study area, with about 328 mounds per hectare.
  • Plant abundance at mound margins was 77% greater than in undisturbed areas.
  • Soils with plant burial had 13% more total soil carbon and 11% more total nitrogen than undisturbed soils.
  • Mound crusts reduced water infiltration. The authors did not detect corresponding increases in nitrate, ammonium, or phosphate leaching out of the rooting zone, or in CO2 flux.

Why mound surfaces, edges, and undisturbed ground differ

Gopher effects were not uniform across the ground. Mound crusts slowed water infiltration, while mound margins supported greater plant abundance than undisturbed areas. The study also associated plant burial with higher total soil carbon and nitrogen. These are distinct observations about different parts of the landscape; they should not be collapsed into a claim that all gopher-disturbed soil changed in the same way.

The researchers interpreted burial and reduced infiltration as processes that could accelerate soil carbon accumulation. They suggested mound edges may benefit vegetation through concentrated resources and release from competition. Together, the measured patterns point to fine-scale heterogeneity—small differences in soil conditions and plant communities—rather than a uniform improvement everywhere. These interpretations concern the patterns documented at the study site; they do not demonstrate that the 24-hour enclosure caused them.

Did that one day change the ecosystem forever?

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: gophers later helped shape local conditions during primary succession, and field research measured associations between their mounds, vegetation, and soil nutrients at the Pumice Plain. It does not support attributing the mountain’s long-term recovery to one gopher’s day in an enclosure.

A 2024 article discusses gophers’ ecosystem-engineering role while recounting the 1982 event, but the available findings do not establish a quantified microbial effect persisting 40 years specifically because of that single-day treatment. The careful distinction is between a memorable early experiment, the later arrival of gophers, and field measurements of their subsequent effects.

The scale of ecological monitoring at Mount St. Helens also extends far beyond this experiment. A 2010 vegetation dataset compiled by Roger del Moral and colleagues included 92 permanent plots, 1,743 plot-year records, and 85 species. Those counts describe the vegetation dataset, not the gopher trial. The dataset publication illustrates the long-term, landscape-level work needed to understand recovery.
