A 2024 study found no evidence that increased mutation was driving genetic differences between dogs near the Chornobyl nuclear power plant and those in Chornobyl City. An earlier study did find genetic differentiation and signals consistent with possible selection, but it did not show that radiation caused those patterns.
What did the 2024 mutation study find?
Dillon and colleagues compared dogs sampled at the Nuclear Power Plant and in Chornobyl City. Using whole-genome sequence data from a filtered set of 106 individuals, they examined chromosomal architecture, short tandem repeat (microsatellite) diversity and the proportion of recently derived alleles. They found no evidence of differential mutation accumulation that explained the differences between the populations.
The authors’ conclusion was specific: “Thus, we find no evidence that an increased mutation rate is driving the genetic differentiation between these two Chornobyl populations.” The result does not mean the dogs have no mutations, or that radiation cannot affect genes. It means the measures tested did not support increased mutation as the explanation for the observed population differences.

Why did an earlier study report genetic differences?
A 2023 study found significant genetic differentiation and little gene flow between dogs sampled around the reactor and dogs in Chornobyl City, about 16 kilometres away. Its genome-wide scan identified 391 outlier loci and 52 candidate genes. Those are results of an analysis, not counts of new mutations.

The authors said the signals might be related to multigenerational exposure, but presented them as candidates needing further investigation. Such a signal can be consistent with selection without proving that a particular trait is an adaptation, or identifying what environmental pressure produced it. Genetic drift and population history are among the alternative explanations that require consideration.

Mutation, genetic differentiation and adaptation are not the same
- Mutation is a change in DNA. A population’s mutation rate concerns how often new changes arise, not how many genetic differences happen to be observed between groups.
- Genetic differentiation means populations differ in the frequencies of genetic variants. It can develop through several processes, including limited gene flow, drift and selection.
- Natural selection can change variant frequencies when inherited differences affect survival or reproduction. A candidate signal in a genome scan is a clue, not proof of the cause or of an adaptive benefit.
- Adaptation is an inherited feature shaped by selection that improves success in a particular environment. The reported candidate loci do not establish that the dogs have adapted to radiation.
That distinction resolves the apparent conflict between the two studies: the 2023 work identified population differences and possible selection signals; the 2024 work tested whether increased mutation explained differentiation and found no evidence that it did.

Radiation is not the only potential environmental pressure in the exclusion zone. Heavy metals, organic contaminants and remediation-related changes may also matter. Population structure matters too: where dogs live, how much they move between groups, and how closely related sampled animals are can influence the genetic patterns researchers observe. The studies do not isolate radiation as the cause of the reported differences.

The broader demographic project describes 302 dogs across three free-roaming populations at the power plant and 15–45 kilometres from the disaster site. Its kinship analysis identified 15 families, including one with members sampled at different sites. These findings underscore why movement and relatedness are relevant when comparing populations; they do not show that radiation caused mutations.

What can—and can’t—we conclude about Chernobyl’s dogs?
- The “record speed” claim is not supported by the direct mutation study described here; that study did not report a record-setting comparative mutation rate.
- The two studied populations differ genetically, and an earlier scan found candidate signals that may warrant investigation.
- The evidence does not establish that radiation caused those differences, nor does the 2024 result rule out every possible genetic or health effect in every dog in the region.
- These studies provide a way to investigate population genetics under complex environmental conditions, not proof of evolutionary rescue or radiation-driven adaptation.
