The “Dracula parrot” is Pesquet’s parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus), a fruit-eating parrot found only on New Guinea. Its bare dark face, red-and-black plumage and harsh, rasping flight call give it a gothic look and sound—but it is no predator. Its life revolves chiefly around fruit, especially figs.
What is the Dracula parrot?
“Dracula parrot” is a popular name for Pesquet’s parrot, also known as the vulturine parrot. It is the sole member of its genus and an endemic species of New Guinea. The World Parrot Trust describes an adult at about 46 cm long and 600–800 g, with a black beak, grey-black bare face and mostly dark plumage offset by vivid red on the lower underparts and wing coverts. Males have a red mark behind the eye, according to the World Parrot Trust species profile.
Why does it have a bare face?
The exposed grey-black skin around the face is an unusual feature among parrots. The World Parrot Trust notes that only three parrot species have bare faces and suggests that Pesquet’s parrot’s facial skin may help keep sticky fruit pulp from matting its feathers. That is a proposed explanation, not a confirmed function.
Does the Dracula parrot really scream?
Its dramatic reputation has some basis in its call. The World Parrot Trust characterizes the voice as harsh and rasping, sometimes growling, and describes a drawn-out screech often given in flight. That does not mean the bird screams constantly or sounds like a person.
It is also reported in pairs and groups of up to 20. Birds perch in the canopy, may be noisy in flight and roost in trees at dusk. These are recorded behaviors, not a guarantee that every flock behaves the same way.

Where does the Dracula parrot live?
Pesquet’s parrot occurs only on New Guinea, but it is not evenly distributed across the island. It is associated mainly with foothill and lower-montane forest. The World Parrot Trust gives a usual habitat range of 500–2,000 metres, with occasional records as low as 30 metres. A 1998 study by Andrew L. Mack and Debra D. Wright found most records between 500 and 1,800 metres, chiefly in hill and lower-montane forest; it also noted occasional lowland records, often near higher terrain. The study is an older account of distribution and ecology, not a current population survey (World Parrot Trust; Mack and Wright, “The Vulturine Parrot,” Bird Conservation International 8, 1998).
What does the Dracula parrot eat?
It is a specialist fruit-eater, not a bird of prey. Mack and Wright describe it as feeding on a few fig species. The World Parrot Trust lists soft fig pulp, mangoes, and flowers and nectar from Freycinetia mangopandans; fig wasps may be swallowed incidentally while the bird eats figs. These records point to a diet centered on fruit, particularly figs, rather than a broad menu of animal prey.

Is the Dracula parrot endangered?
Conservation sources describe real pressure on the species but do not establish a reliable current global headcount. The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Papua New Guinea describes Pesquet’s parrot as Vulnerable and patchily distributed, while emphasizing that exact population estimates are uncertain. Its page reports an estimate of around 21,000 pairs across New Guinea, but does not clearly state when that estimate was made; it should not be read as a current census. The older BirdLife International account also discusses a historical extrapolation to 21,000 pairs from a small study area and warns that it could overestimate or underestimate abundance. These figures are not interchangeable with a recent island-wide count (WCS Papua New Guinea; BirdLife International account).

Hunting for feathers is a documented conservation concern. In parts of Papua New Guinea, red feathers are used in ceremonial headdresses. WCS reports an estimate of approximately 3,200 birds killed each year for headdresses in Kerowagi District alone and equates this with roughly 8% of an estimated wild population. The page carries 2007–2021 copyright but does not identify a publication year for these estimates, so they are not evidence of a newly measured annual rate in 2026. It also reports a cumulative estimate of 160,000–280,000 birds harvested for headdresses currently in use, likewise without a clearly stated estimate year (WCS Papua New Guinea).

WCS describes preserving and extending the life of headdresses as a way to reduce demand for replacement feathers. The organization states: “The conservation return is that any extension of the lifespan of the headdress should result in a lower demand for replacement parts and therefore lower hunting pressure.” This is a conservation rationale, not proof that demand or hunting has already fallen.
Other pressures and uncertainty
Sources also mention trade, meat hunting in some areas, and forest loss or degradation. The reported pressures vary by place; the evidence does not establish that each is equally widespread throughout the species’ range. Mack and Wright’s 1998 study notes that knowledge of the parrot’s distribution and ecology was limited, while BirdLife’s older account describes a rapid but unquantified decline over 60 years. Those historical observations add context, but they do not supply a present-day population trend.

What makes this bird remarkable?
The nickname captures the striking contrast of a bare face, blackish feathers, red patches and a rough screech. The more revealing story is ecological: this New Guinea forest parrot is adapted to a fruit-heavy diet and lives mainly in upland forest. Its appearance may be theatrical, but its conservation story is grounded in local hunting pressures and population estimates whose dates and methods remain uncertain.
