The 2025 report describes an ROV sighting near the Cook Islands, but its specific date and expedition details have not been independently confirmed in the sources available here.
What is the faceless deep-sea creature?
It is the faceless cusk eel, Typhlonus nasus. CSIRO lists the scientific name among cusk eels in its taxonomic listing. The word “faceless” describes how the fish can look in a side-on view; it does not mean the animal lacks a head or mouth.
The 2025 account says the mouth is positioned on the underside and is difficult to see from the side. That explanation is reported by Indian Defence Review; the primary anatomy source for that description was not available to confirm it independently.
Was it a newly discovered species?
No. The fish in the report was identified as the already named species Typhlonus nasus. The headline’s word “discovered” can suggest a new species, but the account describes an observation of a known fish. The Cook Islands ROV sighting is reported by Indian Defence Review; its date and expedition particulars have not been independently verified here.

What does the documented 2017 record show?
A separate CSIRO trawl record documents one specimen of T. nasus caught on 9 June 2017. The record gives a standard length of 43 cm and accession number H 8129-01. These details appear in the CSIRO Data Trawler entry for deployment 220943. It is a single specimen record, not an estimate of how many fish live in the area or an account of the Cook Islands ROV observation.
How strong is the depth claim?
Indian Defence Review states that the fish can occur at depths of up to 5,100 metres. That maximum was not independently confirmed by the CSIRO taxonomic listing or specimen record cited here, so it should be treated as a figure reported by that article rather than verified range data.

Its caption is a separate institutional reference; it does not verify the details of the Cook Islands sighting.
