That is a rediscovery, not proof that the species had been extinct and returned—and it does not mean its survival is secure.
What species was rediscovered?
Alsodes vittatus is a frog in the family Alsodidae, endemic to Chile. In a paper published in ZooKeys on 6 March 2025, Claudio Correa, Edvin Riveros-Riffo, and Juan P. Donoso reported finding it in three places near its type locality—the place associated with the original description—in the Andean foothills of the La Araucanía Region. The species had not been observed for 130 years after it was collected. Read the 2025 study in ZooKeys.
“Rediscovered” is the careful term: a long gap in observations does not establish that a species was extinct. The study documents renewed observations, but does not provide a verified population estimate.
What did researchers learn about its identity?
The team found that the vertebral line—a line along the back used as a visible identifying feature—varies within the population. Its presence alone therefore cannot settle identification. The study’s mitochondrial analysis also placed the sampled A. vittatus populations paraphyletically relative to the single A. neuquensis individual included in that analysis. The authors discuss whether the two names could refer to one species, while noting that relationships among nearby Alsodes remain uncertain. These findings make the frog’s taxonomy an open question, not a reason to treat the rediscovery as doubtful.

What is its conservation status?
The 2025 paper reports that Chile’s official classification lists A. vittatus as Critically Endangered under Supreme Decree No. 42/2011. The decree’s stated basis, as described by the authors, was the species’ restricted distribution and habitat deterioration associated with agricultural and forestry activity.
The paper also discusses an IUCN listing of Data Deficient, reflecting how little was known about the species’ population, ecology, distribution, and threats during its prolonged absence from observation. After documenting the new localities, the authors suggest reassessing the species from Critically Endangered to Endangered. That is their recommendation; it is not evidence that Chile or the IUCN has formally changed its classification since the paper appeared.

What could threaten the frog?
The study connects the earlier Chilean Critically Endangered classification to restricted distribution and habitat deterioration associated with agricultural and forestry activity. That rationale is not a current measurement of population decline.
A May 2025 article in Indian Defence Review additionally names deforestation, livestock grazing, introduced trout, and potential climate-change effects as risks. Those claims are reported by that secondary article; the evidence summarized here does not establish their scale or quantify their effect on A. vittatus. The same article gives an eight-square-kilometer habitat figure, but that figure is not established as a verified measurement by the primary study.

What remains unknown?
- A current population estimate: none is established in the 2025 paper’s findings summarized here.
- Whether Chile or the IUCN has formally updated the species’ classification since the paper’s publication.
- The precise relationships between A. vittatus and nearby Alsodes, including the unresolved comparison with A. neuquensis.
- The measured, species-specific effects of the threats named by the secondary report.
Three documented places bring the frog back into view for science, but they do not by themselves answer how many individuals remain or whether the population is stable. The rediscovery is an important step toward understanding the species; its long-term outlook cannot be inferred from the observation alone.
