The Inaccessible Island rail’s ancestors most likely flew from South America to the remote South Atlantic island about 1.5 million years ago. A 2019 DNA study placed the bird within a mainly South American rail lineage, resolving a long-standing question about its origins. The ancestors could fly; their descendants later became flightless.
Which bird is the world’s smallest flightless bird?
The Inaccessible Island rail is a rail endemic to Inaccessible Island in the Tristan da Cunha archipelago, in the central South Atlantic. The 2019 study describes it as the world’s smallest extant flightless bird. Its scientific name in that paper is Atlantisia rogersi.
The study recommended classifying the rail within the “Laterallus clade,” a lineage made up mainly of South American rails. That is the paper’s taxonomic finding; the sources cited here do not establish whether a later authoritative database has adopted a formal name change.
Where did its ancestors come from?
For years, the rail’s ancestry was uncertain. Its appearance had suggested an Old World affinity, and proposed origins included Africa as well as South America. But rails can look alike because similar body forms have evolved independently in different lineages. Appearance alone had obscured the relationship.

Stervander, Ryan, Melo and Hansson used genetic evidence to reconstruct the rail’s relationships. Their 2019 study placed it within the mainly South American Laterallus clade, supporting South America—not Africa—as the source of its ancestors. The peer-reviewed study appeared in Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, volume 130, pages 92–98.
How did the ancestors reach such a remote island?
The researchers inferred that the ancestors arrived from South America by flight about 1.5 million years ago. Inaccessible Island is at least 3 million years old, so it existed well before the inferred colonization. The DNA result supports a journey through the air, not arrival over a land bridge or “sunken lands.”

“Based on DNA evidence, we now know that reaching Inaccessible Island was no stroll on sunken lands, but that the ancestors reached the island by flight from South America about 1.5 million years ago.”
That route is an inference from the genetic relationships and the island’s isolation, not a directly observed migration. Peter Ryan, a co-author and director of UCT’s FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, summed up the family’s dispersal ability: “Birds of the rail family are extraordinarily good at colonizing remote islands.”

Why did the rail lose the ability to fly?
The ancestry study explains where the rail came from and how its flying ancestors likely reached the island. It does not experimentally establish when or exactly how flightlessness evolved. The University of Cape Town’s account of the researchers’ explanation offers ecological context: on islands with few predators, flight may provide less benefit while remaining costly to maintain. Over generations, natural selection can favor reduced flight capacity in such conditions.
This is a plausible evolutionary explanation, not a measured sequence of events for the Inaccessible Island rail. The contrast matters: the ancestors’ arrival by flight is the study’s inference; the specific conditions and steps that led their descendants to become flightless remain a separate question.

Why are flightless island rails vulnerable?
Reduced flight can be viable in an isolated setting with few predators, but it leaves birds poorly equipped to escape new threats. Introduced mammals can make flightless island birds especially vulnerable. The broader lesson is not that flightlessness is inherently a mistake; it is that an adaptation to one ecological setting may become dangerous when that setting changes.
UCT’s report notes that as many as 1,600 flightless rail species may have occurred on Pacific islands alone, an estimate attributed to Martin Stervander. That figure concerns Pacific islands, not a global total. It illustrates how successful rails can be at colonizing islands and diversifying, while also underscoring the conservation risks facing island birds.

What the study solved—and what it did not
- Resolved: Genetic evidence places the Inaccessible Island rail in a mainly South American lineage, overturning the assumed Old World affinity discussed in the paper.
- Inferred: Its ancestors flew from South America to the island about 1.5 million years ago.
- Not settled by this study: The exact evolutionary process and timing by which the island descendants lost flight, or whether the paper’s proposed taxonomic placement is now the settled name in authoritative databases.
