It is a secure reserve for selected food and agricultural diversity—not a vault for every plant, animal, or form of biodiversity. If a depositing institution loses its own collection, it can retrieve its duplicate samples from Svalbard.
What is the Doomsday Vault?
The nickname refers to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a safety-deposit facility built into a mountain on the Arctic island of Spitsbergen. Gene banks deposit duplicate seed samples there as insurance against the loss of their primary collections. The Food and Agriculture Organization describes it as “the ultimate insurance policy for the world’s food supply.” (FAO overview)
It is not a public seed library: the depositor retains ownership, and only that institution can withdraw and open its boxes. The Vault safeguards copies; it does not replace the gene banks that maintain collections and provide seeds for breeding, research, and education.
Where is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault—and is it in an abandoned mine?
The Vault is near Longyearbyen, on Spitsbergen in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago. Its storage halls are bored horizontally into Platåfjellet, a permafrost mountain. Visitors see a concrete entrance portal, decorated with illuminated artwork by Norwegian artist Dyveke Sanne; the storage chambers lie inside the mountain. (Norwegian government facility description)

The current Vault is not inside an abandoned coal mine. The confusion has a historical source: the Nordic Gene Bank, now NordGen, placed an earlier backup collection in a Svalbard coal mine in 1984. Norway later committed to creating a worldwide facility, which opened on 26 February 2008. (Vault history)
How does the Arctic seed vault work?
Seeds are stored cold inside the mountain
The chambers are mechanically cooled to -18°C. The surrounding permafrost is approximately -3 to -4°C, so the mountain’s natural cold is not enough to maintain the Vault’s target storage temperature on its own. The facility account says backup generators can supply power during an outage. (Vault facility information)
Depositors send sealed samples
A typical sample contains around 500 seeds in an airtight aluminium bag. Bags are packed into crates sealed by the depositor. This is institutional packaging, not a home seed-storage recipe. (Norwegian government facility description)

Capacity is not the same as the current inventory
The three storage halls have stated capacity for 4.5 million seed accessions—about 1.5 million per hall. An accession is a distinct conserved sample, not necessarily a single seed. The latest reliable cumulative snapshot cited by the FAO here is dated February 2025: more than 1.3 million samples representing more than 6,200 plant species. That is a dated count, not a live 2026 total. (Vault facility information; FAO overview)
The Vault’s October 2025 announcement reports 21,647 samples in that year’s 68th deposit, an increment rather than a cumulative inventory figure. (2025 deposit announcement)
Does the seed vault contain every kind of plant?
No. Svalbard stores selected orthodox seeds of food and agricultural importance. Orthodox seeds tolerate drying and cold storage, but seed longevity varies by species and seed lot. It also depends on seed quality, growing and maturation conditions, contamination, and post-harvest handling. NordGen says well-dried, vacuum-packed seeds of the most long-lived species may remain viable for centuries at -18°C; that is not a guarantee for every sample. (NordGen FAQ)

Some crops need other conservation methods:
- Recalcitrant seeds: Coffee, cocoa, coconut, and mango cannot be conserved under the Vault’s drying and cold-storage conditions.
- Crops not suited to conventional seed storage: Potato and banana require other approaches because they do not produce suitable storable seeds in the same way.
The Vault therefore protects a valuable slice of crop diversity, not all plant life or biodiversity as a whole.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who can deposit seeds, and who owns them?
Deposits are for qualifying institutions, not individuals mailing personal seed packets. The depositor retains ownership and exclusive control of withdrawals under the black-box system. Storage and handling are provided free to eligible depositors, but they pay freight to Oslo and onward transport to Longyearbyen. (Depositor guidance; 2025 deposit announcement)
To qualify, an institution must conserve the material as part of a sustainable long-term collection, have the capacity and routines to multiply seed when needed, and certify that samples are already duplicated in a suitable gene bank. Depositors also agree to make material available from their own stocks for breeding, research, and education on terms similar to the International Treaty’s Standard Material Transfer Agreement. The FAO describes the Vault’s legal framework as operating under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture; the depositor agreement and treaty provide the applicable details. Why does the Vault matter if gene banks already exist?
A duplicate held far from a gene bank’s primary collection can help protect crop diversity if that collection is lost through disaster, conflict, or equipment failure. But recovery depends on functioning institutions: gene banks must maintain collections, test germination, multiply seeds, document accessions, and distribute material to users.
The Vault’s partners underscored that distinction in an October 2025 announcement, emphasizing the continuing need for strong gene banks around the world alongside deposits at Svalbard. Norway’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food has overall legal and administrative responsibility; NordGen manages seed operations and coordination with depositors, while the Crop Trust supports crop-diversity conservation and the partnership.
