Its long, low body, short legs, small head, and long tail give it an otter- or weasel-like appearance, but its resemblance is only visual.
What is a jaguarundi?
The jaguarundi is a member of the cat family, Felidae. Its scientific name is Herpailurus yagouaroundi, the binomial used by the IUCN Cat Specialist Group species account. “Jaguarundi” is its common name; it does not mean the animal is a jaguar.
The National Wildlife Federation’s educational species card describes it as a cat that “looks almost like a large weasel or otter.” That comparison captures its unusual outline, not its ancestry or way of life.
Why does it look like an otter?
Compared with the familiar shape of many cats, a jaguarundi is unusually elongated and close to the ground. Its short legs, small head, and long tail contribute to the impression of a weasel or otter. It can climb and swim, but those abilities do not make it an aquatic animal.

Jaguarundis occur in two main color forms: a dark morph that may be black, gray, or brownish, and a red morph ranging from tawny to chestnut. These are color variations of the same species.
Where do jaguarundis live?
The Cat Specialist Group places the species’ range from Mexico through parts of Central and South America, including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and central Argentina. The account notes possible individuals in the southern United States but says updated reports are lacking, so that possibility should not be treated as confirmation of current U.S. presence.

Jaguarundis use varied landscapes, from scrub, thorn forest, wetlands, savanna, and grassland to riparian areas and several kinds of forest. They are often associated with open ground close to dense cover. A broad range of habitat types does not mean they are common: the Cat Specialist Group describes them as uncommon to rare in many places and notes that dense ground vegetation and connections between habitat areas matter.
How do jaguarundis behave and what do they eat?
The Cat Specialist Group characterizes jaguarundis as mainly active by day and mostly ground-hunting. Activity patterns can vary by location, so no single daily schedule should be assumed for every population. They may sometimes travel or forage in pairs, but this does not mean they form stable social groups.

They are generalist carnivores. Small mammals—including rodents and small marsupials—make up much of the diet, while birds and reptiles are also prey. Rabbits, opossums, armadillos, arthropods, and occasional fish have been reported; prey varies by location. Texas Parks and Wildlife, in its state account, lists birds, rabbits, and small rodents as examples.

Conservation claims depend on geography. Texas Parks and Wildlife labels the jaguarundi endangered in Texas and in the U.S. portion of its account, and says it is extinct in Texas. The department identifies Brownsville in 1986 as the last confirmed Texas sighting. It also describes Lower Rio Grande Valley restoration groups planting native shrubs for jaguarundis, ocelots, songbirds, and other wildlife. These are Texas-specific statements, not a verdict on the species across its full range.

For the species as a whole, the Cat Specialist Group highlights habitat fragmentation, the need for landscape connectivity, low detection rates, and the value of long-term monitoring. It also notes that important aspects of jaguarundi ecology and demographics remain poorly known. The sources cited here do not establish a dated, current range-wide IUCN Red List category or population estimate; an undated label elsewhere should not be mistaken for a current assessment.
