New Dinosaur Species from Morocco Adds to Evidence of Cretaceous Diversity

Two associated upper jaws identify Taleta taleta, a new Moroccan hadrosaur. The species adds to evidence for regional diversity, not a wholesale rewrite of Cretaceous history.

Taleta taleta, a newly named duck-billed dinosaur from Morocco, adds a third named hadrosaurid to the country’s late Cretaceous fossil record. Its upper-jaw bones help distinguish it from two other Moroccan species and support the authors’ proposal that these dinosaurs diversified in North Africa. The find adds to what scientists know about Cretaceous ecosystems; by itself, it does not rewrite the period’s history.

What is the new dinosaur species found in Morocco?

The species is Taleta taleta, a lambeosaurine hadrosaur in the group Arenysaurini. Nicholas R. Longrich and colleagues described it in a 2025 paper in Gondwana Research. The paper was published online on 28 May 2025 and appeared in volume 145 on 30 September 2025, pages 142–151. See the paper’s publication record.

The fossil, catalogued as MHNM.KH.1557, consists of two associated upper-jaw bones, called maxillae, with teeth still in place. It was found at Sidi Chennane in Morocco’s Oulad Abdoun Basin, in upper Couche III deposits of the late Maastrichtian, the final age of the Cretaceous.

How do scientists distinguish Taleta from other Moroccan hadrosaurs?

The paper identifies a combination of jaw and tooth characteristics that separates Taleta from Ajnabia odysseus and Minqaria bata. These include a ridge for the ectopterygoid bone positioned high on the maxilla, a straight tooth row, large tooth crowns set at an angle, and a prominent primary ridge on each tooth crown.

The distinction rests on anatomy, not on a complete skeleton or a directly observed difference in behavior. The available material is limited to the associated maxillae, so claims about the animal’s overall appearance, exact body size, or day-to-day diet should be treated cautiously. The paper notes that its small size could indicate a juvenile, while also discussing the possibility that Moroccan forms matured at small size.

How does Taleta compare with Ajnabia and Minqaria?

The 2025 paper counts Taleta as the third named hadrosaurid known from Morocco’s late Maastrichtian phosphates. The 2024 description of Minqaria provides context for the earlier record alongside Ajnabia. The comparison below is limited to what the cited papers establish.

Species Material and diagnostic evidence Locality and context What the comparison establishes
Taleta taleta Two associated maxillae with teeth; the 2025 paper distinguishes it by features including its ectopterygoid ridge position, straight tooth row, and tooth-crown form. Sidi Chennane, Oulad Abdoun Basin, Morocco; upper Couche III, late Maastrichtian. The 2025 authors name it as a distinct species and classify it among Lambeosaurinae and Arenysaurini.
Ajnabia odysseus The 2025 comparison uses its jaw and tooth anatomy; a directly comparable description of its full fossil material is not stated in the cited 2025 summary. Morocco’s late Maastrichtian fossil record; a more precise locality and horizon are not stated in the cited material. It is one of the two previously named Moroccan hadrosaurids compared with Taleta.
Minqaria bata The 2025 comparison uses jaw and tooth anatomy; a directly comparable description of its full fossil material is not stated in the cited 2025 summary. Morocco’s late Maastrichtian fossil record; a more precise locality and horizon are not stated in the cited material. It is the other previously named Moroccan hadrosaurid compared with Taleta; the 2024 paper places it in the same broader regional record as Ajnabia.

The papers’ phylogenetic and biogeographic analyses inform how the species relate to other hadrosaurs, but the available details do not support a ranked comparison of how strongly each species is resolved. Nor do the jaw differences alone establish a particular feeding behavior.

Does the discovery show that hadrosaurs migrated from Europe to Africa?

No fossil in this specimen records a journey. The authors interpret the variety of Moroccan lambeosaurines as consistent with dispersal from Europe into North Africa followed by regional diversification. That is an evolutionary explanation based on anatomy and phylogenetic and biogeographic analysis, not direct evidence of a specific route, migration date, or mechanism.

In this context, “adaptive radiation” means diversification into different ecological niches. The different jaw and tooth forms may be consistent with distinct feeding ecologies, but they do not by themselves prove what each species ate or how it behaved. The authors’ proposal is that dispersal and subsequent diversification help explain the range of Moroccan forms.

Does this discovery rewrite Cretaceous history?

Not on its own. Taleta expands the named fossil record and strengthens the case that hadrosaurids reached North Africa and diversified there before the end-Cretaceous extinction. It does not overturn the chronology of the Cretaceous, establish the full diversity of dinosaurs in the region, or prove the proposed migration scenario. The finding’s importance is more precise: it adds another distinct species to evidence of a diverse late Cretaceous ecosystem in Morocco.
