Scientists formally described the Atlantic manta ray as Mobula yarae in a peer-reviewed paper published in 2025. The description recognizes a distinct species—not an animal that has only just appeared or been seen. Researchers combined anatomical comparisons with genetic evidence to distinguish it from the giant oceanic manta and reef manta.
What is the new Atlantic manta species called?
The species is Mobula yarae. Researchers had proposed for more than 15 years that Atlantic mantas might represent a distinct species, but the 2025 description in Environmental Biology of Fishes established the name formally. The authors place it within the manta genus and report that it is closely related to the giant oceanic manta (M. birostris) and reef manta (M. alfredi). Read the peer-reviewed study.
The epithet yarae honors Yara, a water spirit in Brazilian folklore, connecting the name to the Brazilian cultural context of the research collaboration. The University of São Paulo explains the name.
How did scientists determine it was distinct?
No single marking settled the question. The researchers compared anatomical and external traits and analyzed mitochondrial and nuclear genetic data. Their phylogenetic analyses recovered M. yarae as a monophyletic lineage—one sharing a common ancestor within the group—closely related to the other two manta species. The combined evidence supports treating it as distinct, while its close relationship and resemblance to other mantas help explain why recognition took so long. First author Nayara Bucair told the University of São Paulo that the three species are very similar and that color-based hypotheses alone could not establish whether Atlantic mantas were a new species or a different morphotype. Traits reported in the study
- Stellate-shaped dermal denticles (small tooth-like structures in the skin) and non-bifurcate ramification.
- V-shaped dorsal patches above the gills and reported ventral color patterns.
- A caudal bulb with a residual spine.
- Between 9 and 13 rows of teeth, along with overall morphometric differences.
These are features reported across the study’s comparisons, not a simple field checklist. In particular, appearance alone may not reliably distinguish M. yarae from M. birostris; the taxonomic conclusion rests on the combined evidence. See the study’s reported distinguishing characteristics.

Where does Mobula yarae live?
The 2025 paper says records known to date are restricted to Atlantic waters, spanning oceanic islands and archipelagos as well as coastal and estuarine areas. The Manta Trust summarizes the range as the Caribbean and the Atlantic coastline of the Americas, from Massachusetts to southern Brazil. The University of São Paulo likewise describes records from the northeastern United States to southeastern Brazil, including specimens from Brazil, Mexico, and Florida. Why does recognizing a new manta species matter?
A formal species description gives scientists a shared name and evidence-based reference for identifying and studying the animal. A preserved type specimen, or holotype, is housed at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History; it serves as a physical reference for the description and future comparisons. The description drew on collaboration across field observations, museum material, genetics, and anatomical work.
