Why Some Animals Live for Days, Others for Centuries—and Whether Any Can Avoid Aging

A mayfly’s short adult phase, a Greenland shark’s uncertain age estimate, and a jellyfish’s life-cycle reversal are not directly comparable measures of lifespan.

Animals do not share one biological clock. A mayfly’s brief adult stage is not its entire life, a Greenland shark’s age is a radiocarbon-based estimate rather than an exact birthday, and an “immortal” jellyfish can reverse its development without becoming impossible to kill. Even the oldest coral figure describes a colony, not one solitary animal.

Example What the lifespan claim means Reported figure or limit
Mayfly (Cloeon dipterum) A short adult stage is often used as shorthand for a mayfly’s life, but the species-specific study examined larval development and emergence timing. The study does not establish a universal one-day adult lifespan. Funk, Sweeney & Jackson, 2019
Greenland shark Radiocarbon-derived estimate for the largest female in the 2016 study; not a directly observed age. 392 ± 120 years; NOAA summarizes its largest sampled 5-metre female as 272–512 years. Nielsen et al., 2016; NOAA
Bowhead whale Possible lifespan described by NOAA. 200-plus years. NOAA
Deep-sea coral Age applies to a living colony, not a single solitary animal. More than 4,000 years. NOAA
“Immortal” jellyfish (Turritopsis) Some medusae can revert to an earlier polyp or hydroid stage; no verified lifespan record establishes an individual living forever. Life-cycle reversal is reported, but a lifespan figure is not established. Piraino et al., 1996; 2022 comparative genomics study

Why do some animals seem to live for only days?

The short-lived-animal comparison often focuses on an insect’s conspicuous adult phase: the period when it emerges, mates, and disperses. That is only one part of its life. Mayflies, for example, spend time developing as aquatic larvae before becoming winged adults. The study of Cloeon dipterum cited here addresses larval development and emergence timing; it does not establish that every mayfly, or even every adult of this species, lives for exactly one day.

So “a mayfly lives for a day” is best treated as shorthand for a brief adult stage, not a universal measurement of total lifespan. A precise comparison needs the species, the life stage being counted, and whether the figure describes an individual’s whole development.

How old can a Greenland shark get?

The most striking estimate comes from a 2016 study that analyzed radiocarbon in the eye-lens nuclei of 28 female Greenland sharks. The authors estimated the age of the largest shark they examined, which measured 502 cm, and estimated age at sexual maturity. Their method does not provide an exact birthday: NOAA states that “Carbon dating can only provide estimates, not a definitive age.”

The uncertainty is substantial. In addition to the method’s limits, Canada’s 2025 assessment notes that the estimates have not been validated and that uncertainty about deep-ocean radiocarbon complicates estimates of when the sharks were born. The numbers therefore describe a striking estimate, not a confirmed maximum age for the species.

Why might Greenland sharks live so long? NOAA suggests their slow growth and metabolism may be related to life in deep, cold water. A 2026 genome study identified possible longevity-related features involving immune function, cancer resistance, DNA repair, and predicted chromatin stability. Those are candidate mechanisms and research leads, not established explanations for how an individual shark reaches an exceptional age.

What other animals are known for extreme longevity?

NOAA describes bowhead whales as potentially living for more than two centuries. This is a useful comparison with the Greenland shark because both are individual vertebrates, but the figures have different evidentiary framing: the shark number is an estimate from a particular radiocarbon study, while NOAA presents the bowhead figure as a possible lifespan. They should not be read as two equally precise birthdays or as a definitive ranking.

Is the “immortal jellyfish” really immortal?

Not in the sense of being invulnerable or proven to live forever. Research reports that certain Turritopsis medusae can revert toward an earlier colonial polyp or hydroid stage. This reversal makes the life cycle unusual: instead of proceeding only toward the adult form and death, the animal may return to an earlier developmental state.

That capacity is why researchers and popular accounts use the phrase “potentially immortal.” It does not show that a wild individual avoids death indefinitely. The animal can still die from external causes, and the cited sources do not provide a verified lifespan for an individual that has lived forever.

There is also a naming distinction worth keeping clear. The 1996 paper uses the name Turritopsis nutricula, while later comparative work discusses T. dohrnii. Those names should not be treated as interchangeable without taxonomic context.

Why can a coral be older than an animal?

Because the comparison may be between different biological units. Many corals that look like one organism are colonies made up of genetically identical polyps. NOAA reports living deep-sea corals dated to more than four millennia, but that figure describes colony persistence. It is not a record for one solitary animal in the same sense as a shark or whale’s lifespan.

What makes lifespan comparisons difficult?

  • Life stage: An adult may live briefly even when the animal’s full development takes much longer.
  • Evidence type: Direct observation, age estimation, and a stated possible lifespan are not equivalent.
  • Uncertainty: A point estimate with a wide interval is not an exact age.
  • Biological unit: A colony’s persistence is not the same measure as one individual’s lifespan.
  • Life-cycle flexibility: Reversing development is not the same thing as being unable to die.

Once those distinctions are made, the apparent paradox becomes clearer: animals can have very different lifespans, but “days,” “centuries,” and “immortality” often describe different stages, kinds of evidence, or units of life.
