A newly described Portuguese man-of-war found on a beach in Sendai, Japan, is named Physalia mikazuki—“mikazuki” means crescent moon, a reference to the crescent-shaped helmet ornament of samurai lord Date Masamune. The species description, published October 30, 2025, identifies it through both physical characteristics and DNA evidence. Researchers have proposed a possible route north involving the Kuroshio Current, but the discovery does not prove climate change caused the animal’s arrival or that it has established a permanent population there.
What is Physalia mikazuki?
Physalia mikazuki is a newly described species of Portuguese man-of-war, a siphonophore in the class Hydrozoa. “Jellyfish” is a familiar everyday label, but siphonophores are not true jellyfish. A Portuguese man-of-war is also a colony made up of specialized, connected zooids rather than a single animal with one body plan.
The study, published in Frontiers in Marine Science on October 30, 2025, distinguishes the Sendai specimens from other known Physalia using a combination of anatomy and genetic analyses. Researchers examined traits including the float, zooid clusters, tentacles, and other structures, and compared mitochondrial 16S rRNA and COI sequences. The genetic analyses placed the specimens in a distinct clade. The case for a separate species rests on the combined evidence, not on color alone or a single DNA test. Read the study in Frontiers in Marine Science.
Traits reported in the description
- A bluish to deep-blue or purple crest and a translucent bluish-green membrane on the float.
- Distinctive arrangements of zooids, considered alongside other structural features.
- A reported pneumatophore (float) length range of 9.25–72.4 mm among 37 measurements. That range is from the study’s examined material; it should not be read as a typical size range established from a large population.
For comparisons with related species, the researchers considered several features together: float size and color, zooid-cluster arrangement, gastrozooid shape, tentacle features, and genetic lineage. The examined sample does not establish the full range of variation in the species.

Why is it named after a samurai?
Mikazuki means “crescent moon” in Japanese. The name refers to the crescent-shaped ornament on the helmet associated with Date Masamune (1567–1636), the feudal lord who founded Sendai. The paper gives the Japanese vernacular name as “mikazuki no eboshi” and the English vernacular as “crescent helmet man-of-war.”
Where and when was it found?
Researchers documented approximately 30 colonies along a 1.5-kilometer stretch of Gamo Beach in Sendai Bay, Miyagi Prefecture, on June 11 and 12, 2024. They collected six specimens for analysis. Gamo Beach is near the mouth of the Nanakita River.

The study says long-term monitoring had no earlier Physalia records at the type locality before 2023. That supports calling the 2024 finding a recent documented occurrence; it does not establish the exact date the species first arrived in the area.
How might the man-of-wars have reached northern Japan?
The authors examined oceanographic conditions and used OceanParcels particle simulations to explore possible dispersal. Their results suggest that currents associated with a northward extension of the Kuroshio could transport floating particles toward northern Japan. In the simulations, particles reached Sendai in about 30 days and Aomori in about 45 days. These are modeled travel times for particles, not observations of the discovered animals’ route.

The paper also reports elevated sea-surface temperatures in the Tohoku region during 2022–2024 alongside the current changes. Its abstract describes changes of more than 2°C; its discussion gives a 2–4°C range. Those are the study’s reported figures for the relevant period and region, not a general temperature trend for all of Japan or the global ocean. The authors present warming and current shifts as possible contributors to dispersal and potential establishment. The findings do not prove that climate change caused the beaching, that the species is newly evolved, or that a permanent northern population has become established.
What does the discovery mean for beachgoers and wildlife?
The researchers flag potential ecological and human-health concerns. Portuguese man-of-wars can pose an envenomation risk if people contact their tentacles, and the paper raises the possibility that P. mikazuki could prey on fish eggs, larvae, and small planktonic organisms. The study does not provide a species-specific sting count or a treatment protocol, so it cannot establish how often people are stung by this species or quantify its local ecological impact.

For a beach visitor, the practical point is to avoid touching a Portuguese man-of-war or its tentacles. The newly described species’ possible arrival in northern Japan makes identification and monitoring relevant, but the paper does not establish a continuing presence at Gamo Beach.

Yoshiki Ochiai, second author of the study, described the initial encounter in a Tohoku University release: “I was working on a completely different research project around Sendai Bay in the Tohoku region, when I came across this unique jellyfish I had never seen around here before,” He added: “So I scooped it up, put it in a ziplock bag, hopped on my scooter, and brought it back to the lab!”

First author Chanikarn Yongstar described the taxonomic work: “It was a very involved process recording all the unique body structures that distinguish it from the other four species of Physalia,” She also said: “I looked at each individual part, comparing its appearance to old tomes where scholars drew out the jellyfish anatomy by hand. A real challenge when you look at just how many tangled parts it has.”
