They are not one species: the Philippine sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus pustulatus) and Weber’s sailfin lizard are two examples. These tropical reptiles swim strongly, climb trees and, in some cases, make brief dashes across the water’s surface to escape danger.
What is a sailfin dragon?
“Sailfin dragon” is a common name for sailfin lizards in the genus Hydrosaurus. The Philippine sailfin lizard is Hydrosaurus pustulatus; Weber’s sailfin lizard is another species. A 2022 biodiversity record reported five recognized species based on morphological characters at that time, though taxonomy can change. The Philippine sailfin is an agamid lizard, a family group related to iguanas, according to the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.
The name comes from the distinctive crest rising from the back and continuing along the tail. In Weber’s sailfin lizards, hatchlings lack the pronounced sail, which develops as they grow. The Smithsonian National Zoo notes that mature males have especially prominent crests. The crest may help with swimming and with absorbing warmth from the sun.
Where do sailfin lizards live?
Their ranges depend on the species. Weber’s sailfin lizard is native to the Maluku Islands of eastern Indonesia, where it inhabits warm, humid rainforest, river edges and wetlands. The Philippine sailfin lizard is associated with tropical forest waterways in the Philippines and southern New Guinea.

In the Philippines, the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity describes the species on major islands except Palawan, in settings that include coastal and riverbank vegetation, lakes, mangroves and flooded rice fields near natural forest. The Oregon Zoo profile emphasizes silty lowland rivers in tropical forests. These descriptions point to a shared preference for wooded, waterside habitat, not a single identical range or habitat for every Hydrosaurus.
Regional names for the Philippine sailfin lizard include Tagalog layagan and balubid, and Visayan ibid.

Can sailfin dragons walk on water?
Not in the sustained, effortless sense the phrase may suggest. Sailfin lizards are strong swimmers and can dive into water to escape predators. Their flattened toes have fringes that help them make a short dash across the surface; the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity specifically reports this brief behavior in juveniles of the Philippine species. The toe fringes act like small pontoons, but they do not let the lizard travel across water indefinitely.
They also climb trees and bask. In comments about two juvenile Weber’s sailfin lizards at the Smithsonian’s Reptile Discovery Center, assistant curator of reptiles Matt Evans said, “We’ve seen them climbing, basking, running, and even swimming.” Those observations describe the animals at that facility, not a guarantee that every species or individual behaves identically.

What do sailfin dragons eat?
Sailfin lizards are omnivores, but diets vary by species and age. The Smithsonian says Weber’s sailfin hatchlings hunt animal prey including mice, insects, eggs and smaller lizards; older animals also eat fruits, leaves and flowers. For the Philippine sailfin lizard, the Oregon Zoo lists fish, frogs, insects, fruits and vegetables.
Evans described the young Weber’s lizards at the Smithsonian as not picky eaters. That is a husbandry observation about those juveniles, rather than a universal feeding rule for the genus.

How big do sailfin dragons get?
Reported measurements differ by species and source, so there is no single size that applies to all sailfin lizards.

The different Philippine-species figures are not necessarily directly comparable: the sources do not provide a shared measurement method or explain whether their figures refer to total length in the same way.

What threatens sailfin lizards?
The documented pressures differ across species and sources. The Smithsonian identifies rising sea levels, hunting and collection for the pet trade as pressures on Weber’s sailfin lizards. The Oregon Zoo says Philippine sailfin habitat is threatened by conversion to farmland and logging, and reports collection of hatchlings for the pet trade and local consumption.
Those accounts do not establish one conservation category for every species in Hydrosaurus. The Oregon Zoo page labels the Philippine species “Not listed,” but that wording should not be treated as a definitive current global assessment. A 2022 Singapore record also relays that sailfin lizards were not protected by CITES according to a cited 2021 trade paper; that is dated context, not a current legal determination. The same record describes one individual found near a Singapore reservoir and wooded area as likely illegally imported or escaped and abandoned—an inference about that animal, not evidence about all sailfin lizards in trade.
For wildlife enthusiasts, the useful takeaway is to appreciate these reptiles in their natural habitat or through responsible zoo and conservation programs, rather than seeking to handle or collect wild animals.
How sailfin dragons differ from other “dragons”
The word “dragon” is a colorful common-name element, not a sign that these lizards are closely related to every animal with dragon in its name. Sailfin dragons are adapted for life around water, with a crest and fringed toes. Komodo dragons are a different kind of large lizard, while Draco lizards are known for gliding. Their names may evoke the same mythical creature, but their bodies, habitats and ways of moving are distinct.
