It has not been confirmed. A 2024 study identified DNA from a single hair found in West Java as belonging to the Javan tiger lineage, but its authors said more genetic and field evidence was needed. A later scientific critique disputed that DNA interpretation, and the IUCN assessment reviewed here continues to classify tigers in Java as regionally extinct.
What did the Java tiger DNA test actually show?
The original study, published in Oryx online on 21 March 2024, examined one hair found on a fence near Cipendeuy village in South Sukabumi, West Java. The hair was collected in August 2019, after local resident and conservationist Ripi Yanur Fajar reported seeing what he thought was a Javan tiger in a nearby community plantation. The paper also mentions footprints and claw marks considered potentially consistent with a tiger. Those reported signs do not independently establish what animal was present.
Researchers analyzed a 1,043-base-pair section of mitochondrial DNA called cytochrome b. They compared it with samples including a Javan tiger museum specimen collected in 1930, Sumatran tiger material, sequences from other tiger subspecies, and Javan leopard samples. The authors reported that the putative hair sequence grouped with the museum specimen and interpreted it as Javan tiger DNA.
The authors said the fragment amplified successfully and interpreted that result as indicating the DNA material was fresh rather than preserved. They noted that hairs from the museum specimen, which had been preserved with arsenic, did not yield the same fragment. This laboratory result does not establish when the hair was shed or independently prove that a living tiger was present.

Why is the finding disputed?
In a critique published online on 6 December 2024 in Oryx, Zheng-Yan Sui and co-authors reanalyzed the published sequences and challenged their interpretation. They argue that the sequences may be nuclear copies of mitochondrial DNA, often called Numts, rather than genuine tiger mitochondrial DNA.
The critique also reports 24 mismatches across a 971-base-pair alignment between the putative hair and museum sequences. Its authors describe that divergence as unusually high and say the original paper did not explain its quality-control procedures in enough detail to assess whether errors could have entered the analysis. They conclude that the sequences do not provide good support for claiming that the Javan tiger survives in the wild.

This is a dispute about how to interpret the sample, not a field survey proving that no tiger exists. The original researchers identify the sequence as Javan tiger mitochondrial DNA; the critics question whether it is authentic mitochondrial DNA at all. Neither paper establishes a living population.
What evidence would confirm a surviving Javan tiger?
The 2024 study’s authors wrote: “Whether the Javan tiger actually still occurs in the wild needs to be confirmed with further genetic and field studies.” The critique likewise calls for reliable visual, physical, or genetic evidence before concluding that the tiger survives.

In practical terms, a stronger case would require independently verifiable evidence that can be checked and tied to the species—for example, clear imagery or physical material with genetic results supported by transparent quality controls and suitable comparison samples. Repeated, corroborating findings would help distinguish a living animal from an ambiguous sign or a disputed sample. The cited papers do not report such confirmation.
What is the Javan tiger’s conservation status?
The IUCN tiger assessment reviewed here treats tigers in Java as regionally extinct. Its text says the 2019 putative genetic identification is not strong enough to change that treatment. The assessment’s tiger status was last assessed in 2021; it also includes a 2025 Green Status assessment. This is the status in that assessment, not a new Red List reassessment conducted in 2026.

For historical context, the 2024 study identifies 1976 as the year of the last positive confirmed Javan tiger sighting, in Meru Betiri National Park in East Java. It also reports that a 1999–2000 survey there used 35 camera traps and found no tigers. Those are past observations, not results from a current survey.

No confirmed rediscovery has been established. The 2024 paper presented a potentially important genetic finding from one hair, but its own authors called for further confirmation. The subsequent critique disputed whether the sequences were genuine tiger mitochondrial DNA, and the IUCN assessment continues to list Java as regionally extinct for tigers. The accurate description is a disputed, unconfirmed DNA finding—not proof that the Javan tiger has returned.
