A dinosaur fossil from the Isle of Skye dates to about 166 million years ago, but calling that animal a “dog-sized baby” mixes together claims that the available sources do not support as one find. National Museums Scotland describes the Elgol dinosaur as roughly pony-sized and at least eight years old. The one-to-two-year-old dinosaur was a separate fossil from the Isle of Eigg.
What was found on the Isle of Skye?
National Museums Scotland reports a dinosaur fossil from Elgol, on Skye, dating to around 166 million years ago. The museum says the animal’s bone structure indicates it was at least eight years old and describes it as roughly pony-sized. National Museums Scotland’s account of the Elgol dinosaur does not describe that specimen as a baby.
Skye’s fossil evidence is not limited to bones: University of Edinburgh reporting also describes stegosaur tracks among the island’s dinosaur finds. Tracks and body fossils are different kinds of evidence, and the tracks should not be treated as belonging to the Elgol animal without a source establishing that link.
Was the Skye dinosaur really a baby?
That is not established by the institutional account. National Museums Scotland’s estimate of at least eight years is based on the Elgol animal’s bone structure. The museum calls it roughly pony-sized, not dog-sized. Those details do not support describing this particular specimen as a baby.

A 2026 Earth.com report uses “dog-sized” for a Skye dinosaur but characterizes the animal as an at-least-eight-year-old subadult. That wording is a secondary report; the primary source confirming the dog-size description was not identified here. It should not be combined with the separate one-to-two-year age estimate from Eigg.
Where did the one-to-two-year-old dinosaur come from?
The younger animal was from the Isle of Eigg, not Skye. National Museums Scotland describes the fossil as most likely a stegosaur fibula and estimates the animal was one or two years old. The museum’s account of the Eigg fossil concerns a different specimen from the Elgol dinosaur.

| Find | Island and identification | Reported age of animal | Reported size or context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elgol fossil | Skye; dinosaur fossil described by National Museums Scotland | At least eight years, based on bone structure (National Museums Scotland, 2024) | Roughly pony-sized according to the museum; “dog-sized” appears in a 2026 secondary report |
| Stegosaur fossil | Eigg; most likely a stegosaur fibula, according to National Museums Scotland | One or two years; publication date not stated on the retrieved museum page | Not stated in the cited museum account |
Why the headline description can be misleading
The phrase “166-million-year-old dog-sized baby dinosaur” appears to merge details that belong to different descriptions: the Elgol fossil’s approximate age and Skye location, the secondary report’s dog-size wording, and the Eigg fossil’s very young age estimate. The institutional sources support keeping those claims separate rather than presenting them as a single settled description.
