A humpback whale around 9 metres long that stranded off Southerness, Dumfries and Galloway, on 15 October 2024, was found to have refloated by dawn the next day. Responders monitored it and provided first aid, but did not try to move it: the incoming tide was central to the outcome. The immediate report was hopeful; the whale’s later whereabouts and survival were not confirmed.
Where and when the whale stranded
British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) was alerted at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday 15 October 2024 to a live-stranded whale off Southerness in Dumfries and Galloway, on Scotland’s Solway coast. The tide was ebbing. At low tide, this stretch of beach exposes roughly two kilometres of flat sand and rock, and the whale was far enough offshore that its species and condition were initially difficult to assess. How responders identified and helped it
A local couple familiar with the area walked out safely to take photographs while BDMLR medics and the Coastguard were on their way. Those photographs identified the animal as a humpback about 9 metres long. BDMLR described it as stressed, gulping and flailing its tail; the organisation said the movements appeared to push it farther into the sand. It judged the whale to be in moderate condition apart from its stress, and reported that as it tired, it seemed to calm and its breathing relaxed. BDMLR Marine Mammal Medics and HM Coastguard attended. They controlled the crowd, provided first aid and monitored the whale and conditions. BDMLR said a large baleen whale cannot be moved safely because of its size and weight. The returning tide brought an immediate reprieve
The whale had stranded a couple of hours before low tide. As the water came back over the exposed beach, it refloated. With daylight fading, responders retreated to shore for safety. A medic returned at first light on 16 October and found no sign of the whale along the coast or about a mile offshore. BDMLR
In an account published on 23 October 2024, conservation charity ORCA also reported that the whale had refloated itself by dawn and moved on. ORCA said monitoring since 15 October had not found it on nearby Scottish beaches or at sea. What to do if you find a stranded whale
For the public, the right response is to report the animal and keep well away. UK government guidance says to report a live or possibly live whale immediately, giving its location, the date found and the species if known; a photograph can help with identification. Do not approach or touch the animal, and do not try to return it to the sea. For a stranding in Scotland, the guidance directs reports to the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme; it also lists the BDMLR hotline for live animals.
