Deep-sea fish have been filmed with parasites attached, but the evidence behind this story does not show them being “devoured alive.” A 2016 study of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) footage off the northeastern United States documented ectoparasites on some observed fish. It recorded parasitism—not the fish being eaten or killed.
What the 2016 study actually observed
Andrea Quattrini and Amanda W.J. Demopoulos examined high-definition footage from 43 ROV surveys conducted in 2013–2014 off the northeastern United States. The surveys covered open slopes, submarine canyons, seamounts, and cold seeps, at depths from 494 to 4,689 meters. The study was published in 2016 in International Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife (paper indexed at PubMed Central; full text at ScienceDirect; USGS publication record).
The researchers confirmed ectoparasites—parasites living on the outside of a host—on 9% of 125 fish individuals visible in the sampled footage. Those fish represented 25 species. Some more abundant fish species had observed rates around 33%. These are results from the study’s video observations, not an estimate for all deep-sea fish.
Which parasites and fish were involved?
The observed parasites belonged to two broad groups: copepods and isopods. Reported families included Lernaeopodidae and Sphyriidae among the copepods, and Cymothoidae, Aegidae, and Gnathiidae among the isopods.

Gnathiids appeared on 19 host species, the widest host range reported for a parasite group in this study, and were observed at depths down to 3,260 meters. Their infections were especially intense on Antimora rostrata in submarine canyons. That finding describes a particular host and habitat in the footage, not a typical outcome for every fish or gnathiid encounter.
Does the footage show fish being eaten alive?
No. The paper documents parasites attached to fish observed on ROV video. It does not report that the filmed fish were being consumed alive or that they died from the observed infections. The phrase “devoured alive” therefore goes beyond what this study establishes.

Video observations can document visible parasites and their association with fish, but this study does not establish what happened to each individual afterward. Its findings support the presence of ectoparasitism in the surveyed deep-sea communities, not a claim about parasite-caused death.

The survey’s shallowest observations began at 494 meters, so “500 meters” is a reasonable shorthand for the approximate depth threshold. But the study covered a much wider range, from 494 to 4,689 meters, and only the northeastern United States. It should not be read as a survey of all oceans or every deep-sea habitat.

Parasite prevalence and intensity varied among fish hosts and habitats. The results do not support a single rate that applies uniformly across depths, species, or locations. As the authors put it, their observations show ectoparasitism occurring “across a variety of habitats, depths, and locations” and as a component of deep-sea biodiversity.
