Yes—a humpback whale was reported off Deal on the Kent coast in January 2025. A wildlife watcher recorded the animal and reported the sighting to the Kent Dolphin Project, which Kent Wildlife Trust described as confirmed. The Trust’s event-specific release was published on 10 January 2025; a later article using the headline “Massive Ocean Visitor Surprises U.K. Coastline in Stunning Wildlife Encounter” appeared on 18 May 2025 and was modified on 1 June 2025. Those are publication dates, not the date of the sighting.
What was seen off the Kent coast?
The animal was identified as a humpback whale off Deal, Kent. According to Kent Wildlife Trust, a wildlife watcher captured footage and reported it to the Kent Dolphin Project. The Trust called it a confirmed sighting; the footage itself is not independently assessed here.
The local project brings together the Sussex Dolphin Project and Adonis Blue Environmental Consultants, part of the Kent Wildlife Trust Group. Max Renton of Adonis Blue Environmental Consultants called the report “a really exciting spot,” and added: “While it’s not yet possible to confirm whether these are the same individuals, sightings like these highlight the importance of ongoing efforts to understand and protect our marine life.”
Kent Wildlife Trust says humpback whales can reach 18 metres long. That is a species-level maximum cited by the Trust, not a measurement of the whale seen near Deal.

What does the sighting tell us—and what doesn’t it establish?
The report establishes that a humpback whale was seen and recorded off Deal, according to the Trust’s January 2025 release. It does not, on its own, establish why the whale was there, whether it was part of a migration pattern, or whether it signals a change in the species’ population. The event-specific release does not substantiate broader claims about migration recovery or climate effects.
Why is Sea Link mentioned in connection with the whale?
Kent Wildlife Trust has linked its concern about the proposed National Grid Sea Link project to the need to protect marine wildlife. Emma Waller, the Trust’s Planning and Policy Officer, said: “Their current approach lacks adequate mitigation for marine mammals.” She also said: “Renewable energy is vital, but it must not come at the expense of wildlife when alternative options are available.” These are the Trust officer’s views and campaign position, not an independent regulatory finding that Sea Link would harm whales or marine ecosystems.
