South American tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) have been documented living in the wild in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, after more than a century without a recorded sighting there. Camera traps in Cunhambebe State Park captured the animals during monitoring from 2023 to 2024. This is a local rediscovery—not a return from global extinction.
What animal was found, and where?
The animal is the South American tapir, a large native mammal. Rio de Janeiro’s State Environment Institute, known as Inea, reported camera-trap records from Cunhambebe State Park, in the state’s Costa Verde region. The park covers nearly 40,000 hectares, according to the state government announcement.
The last earlier tapir record in Rio de Janeiro state was from 1914, at Serra dos Órgãos National Park. The new records therefore follow a gap of more than 100 years. The evidence supports that broad description; it does not establish an exact 111-year interval.
What did the camera traps record?
108 records from 2023 to 2024
Inea said ten cameras produced 108 tapir records during monitoring from 2023 to 2024. The images included groups of up to three animals and a female with a calf. The agency said those observations suggest a well-established local population, but the records are not a population census and do not provide a total count.

Presence is established; origin is not
The cameras documented free-ranging tapirs in the park. Inea said the sightings did not depend on direct human intervention or a local reintroduction project. The records do not show whether the animals had persisted undetected in the region or arrived from elsewhere; their geographic origin remains unresolved.
Were tapirs extinct?
They had been considered extinct in the wild in Rio de Janeiro state, not extinct worldwide. The distinction matters: this finding documents the species’ presence again in one part of its range, rather than a global recovery from extinction.

The state government associates the historical disappearance from Rio de Janeiro with habitat loss, hunting and unchecked exploitation, and urbanization. The available account does not establish a single cause for the century-long absence of records.

The state agency describes tapirs as ecologically important because they eat and disperse seeds. Moving seeds can help maintain the habitats in which they live, although the announcement does not quantify any forest-regeneration effect at this particular site.

Cunhambebe State Park is part of a broader conservation context that includes protected-area management, forest restoration, environmental enforcement and education. Those activities are relevant conditions, but the reported evidence does not prove that a particular intervention caused tapirs to appear. Separately, the state announcement reported a 68% reduction in Atlantic Forest deforestation in Rio de Janeiro in 2023; that is a state-level figure, not evidence of a specific reduction around the camera-trap locations.

What does the finding tell us—and what remains unknown?
- Documented: free-ranging South American tapirs were recorded by camera traps in Cunhambebe State Park during 2023–2024.
- Suggested, not counted: the groups and female with calf led Inea to interpret the records as evidence of a potentially established population, but no population estimate was reported.
- Unresolved: the records do not reveal where the animals came from or how long they had been present before detection.
- Not demonstrated: the finding does not identify one conservation action as the cause of the animals’ presence.
