Some animals become less socially connected as they age, but it is not a rule for every species—and researchers have not established one cause. A 46-year study of female European red deer found that individuals formed smaller groups and had fewer, weaker connections as they grew older. Their ranges also shrank and shifted toward less densely populated areas.
What the long-term red deer study found
Researchers analyzed 46 years of data from individually monitored female European red deer (Cervus elaphus). Crucially, they found declining social connectedness within individuals as they aged, rather than only a difference between younger and older deer observed at one point in time. The study also associated aging with smaller home ranges and movement into less densely populated, lower-quality areas. The study record describes these linked changes in social and spatial behavior.
The National Institute on Aging reports that the analysis covered more than 200,000 observations of 712 deer. Researchers tracked average group size, the number of connections per deer, and connection strength; all three measures declined with age. Older deer lived in smaller groups and had fewer and weaker social connections. The NIA summary also says demographic changes, including the loss of close associates, did not explain the decline in that analysis. Read the NIA summary.
Why might older deer have fewer social connections?
The study establishes an age-related pattern and links it with changes in space use, but it does not establish a definitive cause. The measured shift in where deer lived did not fully account for their declining social connectedness.

Competition and aggression
One proposed explanation is that older deer may avoid competition or aggression from younger animals. This is a hypothesis, not proof that older deer deliberately withdraw or that avoiding younger deer causes the measured pattern.
Changes in diet and habitat
Tooth wear may make tougher plants more difficult for older deer to chew and digest. If that affects where they can feed, it could influence habitat choice and bring them into contact with fewer other deer. The NIA presents this as a possible explanation, not a demonstrated mechanism.

Other candidate explanations
A review of mammalian social aging groups possible drivers into three broad categories: changes arising from senescence, changes that may help reduce the costs of senescence, and changes associated with positive effects of age or demographic shifts. It also discusses candidate influences such as mobility, energy, habitat selection, and greater focus on preferred partners. These possibilities need to be tested in the relevant species and setting; they are not a universal checklist of causes. The review record and its full text explain why expected patterns depend on an animal’s ecology and life history.
Does social aging look the same in every animal?
No. Social aging means age-related changes in social behavior, and those changes can take different forms: less contact, more selective relationships, or shifts in space use, among others. A 2024 study of behavioral aging across long-lived species, including griffon vultures, reported varied patterns and lower interaction by older individuals in the studied vulture population. That is another example of age-related behavioral change, not evidence of one mechanism shared by all species. The 2024 study examines behavioral plasticity and aging in long-lived species.

Researchers also need to distinguish genuine changes within individuals from differences between age groups. If animals with certain traits are more likely to survive, the older individuals still present may differ from younger ones even without a within-individual change. Reviews emphasize the value of following individuals over time to separate these effects. This review on aging and sociality discusses the relationship between social behavior and aging patterns.

A 2023 comparison of about 1,000 mammal species found that group-living species generally live longer than solitary species. That is an evolutionary association between a species’ social organization and its lifespan. It does not show that an individual animal becomes more or less social as it ages, and it should not be treated as an explanation for the red deer findings. The comparative study addresses social organization and lifespan across mammals.
