The bird behind the “world’s most dangerous bird” reputation is the cassowary—usually the southern cassowary in Australian accounts. It is a living bird, not a surviving dinosaur, but its striking casque, powerful build and three-toed feet can look prehistoric. A cassowary can seriously injure someone with a kick, yet attacks are not typical; keeping your distance and never feeding one are the practical rules.
Which bird is called the world’s most dangerous?
It is the cassowary, a large, flightless rainforest bird native to New Guinea and northeastern Australia. The phrase “world’s most dangerous” describes its reputation, not a scientifically established ranking: the sources available do not provide a standardized comparison of danger across bird species.
Cassowaries are birds, not non-avian dinosaurs. Their appearance helps explain the comparison: they have a large body, sturdy legs, three-toed feet and a helmet-like casque on the head. Modern birds are descended from theropod dinosaurs, as National Geographic explains, but a cassowary is not a dinosaur that survived unchanged.
How dangerous is a cassowary to people?
A cassowary can cause severe injuries, particularly with a forceful kick and the sharp claw on its inner toe. The possibility of injury is real, but that does not mean attacks are routine. Queensland’s Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation says southern cassowaries are not typically aggressive unless provoked or cornered.

A 1999 paper by zoologist Gregory S. Kofron reviewed 221 cassowary attacks recorded in Queensland; 150 involved people. Of those 150 human attacks, 75% involved birds that people had previously fed. The review recorded seven serious human injuries and one death. The fatal incident involved a person trying to kill the cassowary. These are historical Queensland records, not a current global attack rate.
The pattern offers a useful distinction: a large wild animal can be capable of serious harm without normally seeking out people. Feeding, approaching, cornering or provoking a cassowary can make an encounter more dangerous. The 1999 review also found that jogging did not incite cassowaries to attack; that result is not a reason to approach one or test its behavior.

What makes a cassowary look dinosaur-like?
Its casque and build
The southern cassowary is among the world’s largest birds. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute describes cassowaries as the third-largest birds, after ostriches and emus. It says the species can reach 5.5 feet (170 cm); females can reach 175 pounds (80 kg), while males typically weigh about 121 pounds (55 kg).
The casque is a hollow, pointed structure made of keratin, the same material found in hair and fingernails. The Smithsonian says recent studies suggest it may act as a thermal window, helping the bird release heat. Its exact role should not be confused with a dinosaur’s bony crest.

Its feet and movement
The feet are the feature most relevant to safety. The Smithsonian lists a five-inch claw on each foot, while WWF describes the inner-toe claw as four to five inches long. WWF also reports that cassowaries can run up to 30 mph; the Smithsonian says they can jump up to seven feet. These are source-reported figures, not a promise of how a particular bird will move in an encounter.
What should you do if you see a cassowary?
Follow Queensland’s wildlife guidance if you are in cassowary country. Give the bird space rather than trying to get a closer look or a photograph.

- Keep your distance. Do not approach the bird or its chicks.
- If it moves toward you, back away slowly. Do not provoke, corner or try to handle it.
- Put a barrier between you and the bird if needed. Queensland advises using an object such as a tree or bag.
- Do not feed it. Queensland says feeding cassowaries is illegal there and dangerous because it encourages them to approach people, increasing risks to both birds and people. Laws vary by jurisdiction.
In areas where cassowaries live, keep dogs leashed or fenced, secure food waste and drive carefully. These steps reduce the chances of an avoidable encounter and protect the birds as well as people.

Cassowaries eat mostly fruit, though they sometimes take small animals. They disperse seeds in their droppings, helping maintain rainforest plant communities and supporting forest regeneration. Some plants depend on seeds passing through a cassowary’s digestive system to germinate. A bird that can be dangerous at close range is also an important part of the ecosystem it inhabits.

They also have a distinctive role in reproduction and parenting: males incubate the eggs and care for the chicks. Queensland says clutches generally contain three to five eggs and incubation lasts about 50 days. The Smithsonian says chicks need around nine months of care before becoming independent.
Is the southern cassowary endangered?
The answer depends on the geographic scope of the assessment. Queensland identifies the southern cassowary as endangered within its jurisdiction. The Smithsonian species page reports the global IUCN category as Least Concern and says fewer than 1,500 survive in Australia. Those statements refer to different scopes and should not be treated as contradictory measurements of the same local population.
Queensland lists habitat loss and fragmentation, vehicle strikes, and introduced predators such as dogs and pigs among the threats. Its fact sheet also notes the bird’s cultural importance to First Nations communities, including traditional names and stories; those traditions belong to distinct communities and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why the “most dangerous” label misses the fuller story
The cassowary deserves respect because its kick and claws can cause serious injury. But the label can obscure the more useful facts: historical Queensland records linked many attacks on people to birds previously fed by people, and wildlife authorities say cassowaries are not typically aggressive unless provoked or cornered. At the same time, habitat change, traffic and introduced predators threaten the birds, while their seed dispersal helps sustain rainforest ecosystems.
