It taps branches, listens for sounds that may reveal a hidden tunnel, gnaws an opening with its strong incisors, then uses the flexible finger to hook out prey. Aye-ayes are nocturnal lemurs found only in Madagascar.
Why does the aye-aye have a long middle finger?
The aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) has unusually long, slender middle and ring fingers. Together, these digits account for about 65% of the animal’s hand length, according to the Natural History Museum’s 27 October 2022 account of research on the species (Natural History Museum).
The especially flexible third finger is useful for reaching into narrow spaces and retrieving food. It is one part of a coordinated feeding method—not a tool that locates and obtains prey on its own.
How does an aye-aye find grubs in a tree?
- Tap: The aye-aye rapidly taps a branch or trunk with its middle finger.
- Listen: It attends to the sound and reverberations, which may indicate a hollow or insect tunnel beneath the surface.
- Open: If a spot seems promising, it gnaws or tears away bark and wood with its prominent incisors.
- Retrieve: It inserts the slender, flexible third finger and hooks larvae out of the opening.
This is tap-foraging: tapping and listening help the animal identify likely feeding sites, its teeth make access, and the finger retrieves prey. Describing the process as bat-like echolocation would overstate what these observations establish; the sources describe acoustic clues from tapping, not a complete sonar system.

What do aye-ayes eat?
Aye-ayes eat insect larvae and other invertebrates, but they are not exclusively insect-eaters. Their diet also includes nuts, seeds, and fruit. They can gnaw into wood and crack hard foods with robust incisors that continue growing. Reported crop foods include coconut, lychee, and mango, bringing aye-ayes into conflict with people in some places (Lemur Conservation Network; Duke Lemur Center; San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance).
Is the aye-aye nocturnal?
Yes. Aye-ayes are nocturnal and chiefly solitary while foraging. The Duke Lemur Center says an aye-aye may spend up to 80% of the night feeding and travelling through the forest canopy; its live species page does not give a publication year for that figure (Duke Lemur Center).

Where do aye-ayes live?
Aye-ayes are native to Madagascar. The Duke Lemur Center describes them in eastern and western Madagascar, while the Lemur Conservation Network lists a range of habitats: primary rainforest, deciduous forest, secondary growth, dry scrub forest, and mangrove swamp (Duke Lemur Center; Lemur Conservation Network). These descriptions indicate broad habitat use; they do not provide a precise current range map.
What else can the long finger do?
The finger has also been observed being used for nose-picking. In its 27 October 2022 press release, the Natural History Museum summarized a study in which researchers used CT scans of a specimen to reconstruct the position of the finger. The reconstruction suggested it could reach into the throat. This observation concerns a separate behavior, not an established feeding function or evidence for a health claim (Natural History Museum).

Are aye-ayes endangered?
The Duke Lemur Center, Lemur Conservation Network, and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance describe the aye-aye as Endangered. They identify habitat loss or fragmentation and hunting or poaching among its threats. The Duke Lemur Center also notes crop conflict and harmful omen-related beliefs in some areas. Such beliefs and their effects vary by region; Malagasy communities should not be treated as culturally uniform, and folklore is not the only conservation pressure.
San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance describes work with partners in Madagascar that includes monitoring and education, ranger training, and camera-trap methods (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance). The cited pages do not establish a clearly dated current estimate of the wild population, so a global count should not be inferred from them.
