Which TED Talks are relevant to the swine industry? Two talks offer distinct starting points: Christien Meindertsma traces pig-derived materials into products beyond pork, while Lewis Bollard discusses factory farming and reform more broadly. Bollard’s talk is relevant context for swine production, but it is not pig-specific.
Christien Meindertsma: How pig parts make the world turn
In her TEDGlobal 2010 talk, author Christien Meindertsma follows the afterlife of an ordinary pig into supply chains beyond food. TED’s talk page says the pig’s parts appear in at least 185 non-pork products, with bullets and artificial hearts among its examples. That figure is TED’s description of the talk, not an independently verified current count. Watch the talk on TED.
For swine-industry readers, the talk is a useful prompt to consider traceability and the less visible material uses of an animal after processing. It offers a supply-chain and material-culture perspective rather than a production or husbandry guide.
For further reading, Meindertsma’s book Pig 05049 is identified on the TED talk page.

Lewis Bollard: How to end factory farming
Lewis Bollard’s TED2025 talk, published in April 2025, makes a broader case about factory farming, food labels, technology, public pressure, and reform. It may interest readers thinking about animal welfare and the social pressures facing livestock production, but TED’s description does not present it as a talk about pigs or swine production specifically. Rank #2
How the two talks differ
| Talk | Focus | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Christien Meindertsma, “How pig parts make the world turn” | Pig-derived materials in products beyond pork | Supply chains, traceability, and material uses |
| Lewis Bollard, “How to end factory farming” | Factory farming and broad approaches to reform | Animal-welfare context and public pressure around livestock production |
These talks are different lenses, not a ranking and not a complete representation of the swine industry. The first is directly about pigs and their material afterlives; the second concerns factory farming generally.
