The approval is for the alteration’s use in pigs—not a guarantee that producers can currently buy these animals or genetics. The FDA says the trait is intended to confer resistance in pigs with two copies of the alteration.
What changed since farmers were awaiting testing?
The title reflects the situation described in an Agriculture.com article published September 29, 2022, when the work was still undergoing multigenerational testing and commercialization was described as years away. That is now historical context: the FDA approved the deletion of exon 7 of the CD163 gene in domestic pigs on April 29, 2025. The approval covers the intentional genomic alteration (IGA), with specified breeding and food uses for pigs carrying one or two copies and their offspring. FDA’s approval summary is the primary source for the decision and its scope.
Approval and commercial access are different questions. The FDA record establishes the regulatory approval, but does not say whether or where individual producers can obtain pigs or breeding genetics, or on what terms. Farmers seeking animals should verify supply and eligibility directly with the relevant supplier.
How does the CD163 alteration aim to protect pigs from PRRS?
CD163 is a pig protein involved in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection. According to the FDA’s approval summary, the part of the protein encoded by exon 7 plays a crucial role by allowing the virus to bind. The approved alteration, called CD163ΔE7, deletes that segment while leaving the rest of the protein expressed. The intended result is resistance in pigs with two copies of the alteration.

That distinction matters: FDA describes resistance in homozygous pigs, meaning animals with two copies. Its approval also includes pigs with one copy and their offspring for breeding or use as food sources; that scope should not be read as a claim that every pig carrying one copy is resistant.
What did FDA evaluate?
FDA explains that the regulated product is the IGA contained within the pigs, rather than the pigs themselves as a drug. Its FOI Summary for NADA 141-609 says the sponsor demonstrated the intended alteration, identified and selectively bred away unintended alterations, and showed that pigs carrying the IGA were as healthy as pigs without it. FDA also concluded that the altered pigs were resistant to PRRSV and that food from them presented no safety concerns for people or animals.

These are the agency’s review conclusions for this approval. FDA describes its broader approach to heritable alterations in animals in its January 2025 final guidance, GFI #187B, and on its intentional genomic alterations information page.
Why PRRS matters to pig farmers
PRRS can affect both reproduction and respiratory health. The 2022 Agriculture.com report described failed conception, late-term abortions, premature farrowing, stillborn or weak piglets, and respiratory effects. It cited an estimate of more than $600 million annually in costs to North American farmers; that is Agriculture.com’s 2022 estimate, not a current official accounting.

A separate Agriculture.com story published March 3, 2023 reported $500 million in annual losses of reproductive productivity. The two figures use different wording and dates, and the available reporting does not establish that they were calculated in comparable ways. Neither should be treated as a reconciled current industry total.
Is this the same work as Acceligen’s PRRS-resistant pigs?
No equivalence is established. A March 3, 2023 Agriculture.com report covered separate PRRS-resistance work by Acceligen and quoted Iowa State University professor Daniel Linhares describing PRRSV as endemic and common in swine-producing states. That report does not establish that Acceligen’s pigs use the same CD163ΔE7 alteration or have the same regulatory status as the FDA-approved Genus plc alteration. Nor do the sources provide a detailed, comparable head-to-head effectiveness assessment.

What should farmers check before pursuing the genetics?
- Confirm local supply: FDA approval does not establish that pigs or breeding genetics are available in your area.
- Ask what is being offered: Clarify whether the source is selling animals, breeding stock, or access to genetics, and which animals carry one or two copies of the alteration.
- Verify relevant terms: The cited approval materials do not set out producer-level sales terms or availability. Get current details from the supplier before making breeding or purchasing plans.
The historical 2022 report explained why development took time: conventional pig breeding spans multiple generations, with a generational interval of at least a year, and the work involved evaluating traits across populations, environments, and stress conditions. Those were considerations during the earlier testing period, not evidence that FDA approval remains pending.
