Then learn the seasonal care involved, choose a suitable site and compatible equipment, and line up local help for sourcing bees and managing colony health. Beekeeping is ongoing livestock care—not a one-time backyard installation—and local rules and conditions vary.
Can you keep bees where you live?
Start with your city or county code or zoning office, then check with your state apiary authority or cooperative extension program. Rules can differ between neighboring jurisdictions, so general advice cannot establish whether a hive is permitted at your property.
Ask specifically about whether honey bees are allowed, colony limits, registration, required setbacks or placement conditions, nuisance rules, and any requirements that apply if you plan to sell honey. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources advises checking local code enforcement, while Cornell recommends checking community, city, county, and state requirements before buying bees or equipment: UC ANR’s beekeeping guide and Cornell’s beekeeping resources. Confirm the exact requirements with the relevant authorities; rules cited for one state are not nationwide rules.
Learn the seasonal work before you spend
A class, local beekeeping association, or experienced mentor can help you learn bee biology, inspection technique, seasonal timing, and local pest-management practices before you commit. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension describes beekeeping as “livestock management”: it involves routine care, seasonal decisions, and hands-on problem solving. Its beginner guide advises new keepers not to go it alone: UGA Extension’s beginner guide.

Look for a course or mentor familiar with your climate and local conditions. UC ANR’s guide points to UC Davis bee-lab classes, but availability and schedules are regional; check directly with nearby associations and extension programs rather than assuming a particular class is offered where you live.
Choose a hive format and compatible equipment
Buy equipment to match the hive format you intend to use. A “beekeeping starter kit” or “Langstroth hive kit” can bundle many basics, but kits differ: check the frame count, box dimensions, included protective gear and tools, and whether bees are included. A kit does not replace training, a legal site, bees, or locally appropriate care supplies.

| Format | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Langstroth | UC ANR describes the 10-frame Langstroth as a common format with interchangeable components. Ask whether nearby mentors and suppliers use the same format, and consider the weight of the boxes you will need to lift. |
| Top-bar | UC ANR also describes top-bar hives, which use removable bars rather than the same box-and-frame arrangement. Check local mentor familiarity, compatible parts, and whether its inspection and handling approach suits your goals. |
Common essentials include hive boxes and frames for your chosen format, a stable stand, a veil and other protective clothing, a smoker, and a hive tool. A feeder may be useful during establishment depending on conditions and local advice. Consider lifting ability when choosing box depth: UC ANR notes that a full deep box can weigh more than 90 pounds.
Choose a safe, neighbor-aware site
Use local setback rules as the minimum, then assess how the hive will fit into daily life around your yard. Choose level, stable ground with good drainage; consider sun, wind protection, forage, and access to water where bees can land. Provide a safe water source so bees are less likely to seek water in inconvenient places.

Observe the likely flight path and keep the entrance away from busy walkways, children’s play areas, pets, and neighbors’ outdoor spaces. Talk with neighbors before installation. UC ANR recommends a windbreak, dappled sunlight, a stable raised setup, and neighbor communication; Cornell also highlights flight paths and water in suburban settings. These are planning considerations, not substitutes for legally required setbacks.
Get bees from a reputable local source
Ask a local beekeeping association or mentor for supplier recommendations, then confirm regional ordering and transport timing with the seller. A nucleus colony, or nuc, gives a new colony a head start: UC ANR describes one as including a queen, workers, brood, and food on three to five frames. A package or established colony may be another option, but ask the seller exactly what it includes and what support is available rather than assuming it is equivalent to a nuc.

Plan for regular inspections and seasonal decisions, not just occasional visits to collect honey. Varroa mites are a central colony-health concern. Before bees arrive, ask a local mentor or extension program how to monitor for mites and what management approaches are appropriate in your area and at that time. The right treatment and timing depend on current local guidance; do not choose a treatment or calendar based on generic instructions alone.
Should you expect honey in the first year?
No. UGA Extension advises beginners not to expect a first-year honey harvest and to focus instead on healthy colonies, Varroa management, and getting bees through winter. If a colony later produces a harvestable surplus, you may need extraction and storage equipment; those are conditional purchases, not essentials for starting.
