The largest known single flower is Rafflesia arnoldii, a parasitic plant native to parts of Sumatra and Borneo. Its bloom can reach about a metre across and smells like rotting meat—a scent that helps attract flies that pollinate it. “Smell the worst,” though, is subjective: no authoritative ranking establishes it as the world’s worst-smelling flower.
What is the biggest flower in the world?
Rafflesia arnoldii is widely described as the largest known individual or single flower. Kew gives its diameter as up to 1 metre, while Oxford Botanic Garden describes it as over a metre across. These are attributed descriptions, not a claim that every flower reaches that size. Kew Plants of the World Online accepts the name Rafflesia arnoldi R.Br.; its profile text also uses the spelling Rafflesia arnoldii. Oxford Botanic Garden’s 2022 account uses Rafflesia arnoldii.
The distinction between a single flower and a flowering structure matters. The titan arum, Amorphophallus titanum, is famous for its size and foul odor, but its towering structure is an inflorescence: a cluster of many small flowers. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh reports a tallest recorded titan arum flowering structure over 3.7 metres, grown in Indonesia in March 2016. That is a different record from the largest single flower.
Why does Rafflesia smell like rotting meat?
The flower’s carrion-like odor attracts flies that might otherwise seek a dead animal. Kew names carrion flies from the genera Lucilia and Sarcophaga; pollen can adhere to their backs as they visit flowers. Oxford describes the smell as a false promise of a carcass. In this way, an unpleasant scent to people helps the plant attract pollinators.

“Worst” is a matter of opinion, not a measured botanical ranking. The available authoritative descriptions support a rotten-meat or carrion-like smell; they do not establish that Rafflesia is objectively the single worst-smelling flower. Titan arum also smells of rotting flesh and attracts pollinators including carrion beetles, flies and sweat bees, which is why the two plants are easily confused as “corpse flowers.”
How can a flower grow without leaves or roots?
Rafflesia is a holoparasitic perennial. It has no leaves or roots of its own; most of the plant lives hidden inside a host vine in the genus Tetrastigma. Buds emerge through the vine’s bark, and the flower is one of the few visible signs of the parasite. After flowering, the plant forms fruit containing small seeds.

Kew describes the bloom as having five reddish-brown lobes marked with white spots, surrounding a central cup and column. Flowers are male or female. Kew says a flower may last about a week, though that profile estimate should not be read as a guarantee for every bloom.
Where does Rafflesia grow?
Kew records Rafflesia arnoldii in southwest Sumatra and parts of Borneo, including West Sarawak and West Kalimantan. It occurs in primary and secondary forest up to 1,000 metres above sea level. Because the plant depends on its vine host and has most of its body inside that host, it is not a conventional garden flower or an ordinary seed-growing project. Kew says the species has never been grown at Kew.

Is the flower endangered?
The status needs careful wording because different kinds of assessments are not interchangeable. Kew says Rafflesia arnoldii has not been assessed under IUCN Red List criteria. The same Kew entry displays a predicted extinction-risk assessment from a 2024 publication, labelled “not threatened” with confident prediction status; that prediction is not an IUCN Red List category. Kew also reports declining annual bud production at many sites associated with ecotourism and human disturbance, and identifies tourist disturbance and bud collection as vulnerabilities.
Oxford’s 2022 account says about 40 Rafflesia species occur in Southeast Asia and that most are under severe threat from habitat destruction. That figure is Oxford’s account, not a current taxonomic census, and the threat statement applies broadly to many species in the genus rather than serving as a species-specific assessment of R. arnoldii. Oxford describes collaborative conservation work and quotes Deputy Director and Head of Science Chris Thorogood: “Now is the time to invest collective effort into conserving these beautiful giants.”

Kew notes traditional medicinal uses of buds related to childbirth and as an aphrodisiac, while cautioning that these uses are likely connected to bud shape, color, size and superstition rather than established chemical effects. They should not be treated as proven medical advice.
