You probably cannot keep squirrels out of an entire yard, but you can make it less rewarding for them and protect the places they damage. Secure food first, then use mesh around vulnerable beds or plants and a properly placed baffle or squirrel-resistant feeder to protect birdseed. The right fix depends on whether squirrels are digging in pots, eating a crop, or raiding a feeder.
Can you keep squirrels out of your whole yard?
Not reliably. University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension says it is nearly impossible to exclude squirrels from large areas such as a yard. A more practical goal is to remove easy food sources and protect specific pots, beds, crops, or feeders.
Start by identifying the damage
Look for the specific reward squirrels are getting. Digging in pots or beds, missing planted seeds or fruit, and spilled or disappearing birdseed call for different fixes. If a feeder is drawing squirrels near a garden, temporarily taking it down may help you see whether it is part of the problem.
Remove food and other easy rewards
Store birdseed and pet food in closed containers, secure garbage, and keep accessible scraps and compost from becoming easy meals. Clean up fallen seed beneath feeders and pick up food spills. The University of Florida IFAS notes that removing the resources attracting wildlife can be more cost-effective than relying on barriers, scare tactics, repellents, or removal.

Protect plants, seeds, and garden beds with mesh
For pots and individual plants
Cover exposed soil or protect vulnerable plants with sturdy wire mesh, securing it so squirrels cannot simply lift or move it. Leave enough room for the plant to grow and for watering and maintenance. Remove or adjust the cover as the plant develops.
For a bed or small planting area
Nebraska Extension recommends 1/2-inch wire mesh to protect individual plants or small groupings. Fit the barrier to the area and the digging risk: a cover over the top may address access from above, while a perimeter barrier may need to be secured against burrowing at its base.
An Ask Extension response relays Cornell guidance as an example of a fence buried 6 inches and turned outward 6 inches. That is one reported approach, not a universal specification; site conditions and the type of garden barrier matter. Mesh can reduce access to a protected crop, but it does not make the surrounding yard squirrel-proof.
Keep squirrels off bird feeders
Feeders are a separate access problem. A squirrel guard or baffle on a pole, or a feeder designed to limit squirrel access, can make seed harder to reach. Check the whole setup: branches, fences, nearby structures, or other launch points may let squirrels bypass a guard. Squirrels are agile, so no feeder arrangement should be treated as a guarantee.

Rank #2
- Effective Squirrel Repellent – Made with concentrated natural peppermint oil, these squirrel repellent balls release a long-lasting scent that helps discourage squirrel activity around gardens, bird feeders, and outdoor living areas without harming wildlife.
- Natural Plant-Based Formula – A simple Squirrel Deterrent made with natural peppermint and garlic oils. No sprays, traps, or harsh chemicals. Great for use around homes, patios, sheds, and attics.
- Easy to Place – Each ball is individually wrapped for freshness and comes with a mesh bag for hanging or placing wherever squirrels are active. Ideal around bird feeders, garages, storage areas, roofs, and trees.
- Indoor & Outdoor Protection – Works well as a Rodent Repellent in attics, garages, sheds, crawl spaces, gardens, flower beds, vegetable patches, orchards, and around bird feeders where squirrels frequently visit.
- Long-Lasting Performance – Each application lasts approximately 1–3 months under normal conditions. It can also be used as a Chipmunk Repellent around yards, lawns, trees, and outdoor spaces. Duration may vary depending on weather and placement.
Use repellents cautiously
Repellents are not a dependable substitute for removing attractants or protecting plants physically. Outdoor weather can reduce how long a product remains effective, reapplication may be necessary, and animals may become accustomed to some repellents.
- Read the current product label for the exact location and intended use.
- Do not apply a repellent to edible portions of a crop unless the label explicitly permits it.
- Follow the label’s application and reapplication directions.
Recommendations and permitted uses vary by product. Check the label rather than assuming that a repellent suitable for one setting is safe or allowed on another.
Should you try scare devices or capture squirrels?
Motion-triggered sprinklers are sometimes suggested, but the available extension advice does not establish them as a reliable cure. Treat them as a possible, site-specific deterrent rather than a proven solution; they do not replace food cleanup or barriers around vulnerable plants.
Capture and relocation rules vary by location. For a serious problem, especially one involving a building, contact your local cooperative extension office or a qualified wildlife-control professional for advice that fits local conditions and law. For example, West Virginia University Extension notes restrictions applicable in its state; those rules should not be assumed to apply nationally.
Quick Recap
Choose a fix by the problem you need to solve
| Problem | First step | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Seedlings, fruit, or planted seeds are being eaten | Remove nearby food rewards, then protect the vulnerable plants or small bed with secured mesh. | Mesh protects a defined area; it does not exclude squirrels from the yard. |
| Squirrels are digging in pots | Cover the exposed soil or secure mesh around the pot while leaving room for watering and growth. | Inspect the cover and adjust it as the plant grows. |
| Birdseed is disappearing | Clean spilled seed and use a feeder baffle or squirrel-resistant feeder; check for nearby launch points. | Squirrels may still find a route to the feeder, so monitor the setup. |
| Squirrels keep visiting the yard | Secure seed, pet food, garbage, scraps, and accessible compost. | Reducing attractants can make the area less rewarding, but cannot promise a squirrel-free yard. |
