A compact home can serve both people and cats when its layout works in three dimensions: keep everyday routes and storage usable, then add connected places for cats to climb, pause and rest. Japanese rental, furniture and home-design examples offer practical ideas—but they are different projects, not universal plans or proof that a particular layout produces a behavioral or health benefit.
Start with a shared plan for people and cats
Before choosing shelves or a cat tree, map the room’s everyday use. Identify the clear path from the entrance through the living area, the storage you need, and the actual places for food, water and litter. Then look for opportunities to use wall height rather than filling more of the floor.
A useful cat route connects places to climb with places to pause. Wall steps, shelves or a catwalk can lead to an elevated resting spot; the route should also let a cat get down without relying on a single difficult jump. These are planning principles suggested by the documented projects, not a tested scoring system or a guarantee of safe use for every cat.
How Japanese projects use vertical space
A rental with a connected cat route
Resident First’s Maison de Takaya rental concept combines wall-mounted steps and walkways with a tower, a resting box and a small passage to the litter area. The design presents these features as a way to use vertical space and let a cat move through the home. It also includes an entry gate and an enclosed balcony area intended to help address escape and fall risks. Treat these as features of that particular rental, not technical standards for every home. - 44 LB LOAD TESTED FOR 72 HOURS — Each shelf uses multi-layer solid wood and reinforced metal brackets to support up to 44 lb when correctly installed. The stable structure gives kittens and small to medium cats a secure place to climb, perch and rest without relying on particle board. Always follow the wall-specific installation guide.
- EASIER INSTALLATION FOR COMMON WALL TYPES — Pre-drilled shelves help with alignment, while the included hardware, drill bit, small screwdriver, step-by-step instructions and installation video simplify setup. These wall mounted cat shelves fit US-standard 16 in. stud drywall and solid walls; mount into studs or use the correct hardware for your wall type.
- 5-IN-1 VERTICAL ENRICHMENT — Turn an unused wall into a route for climbing, scratching, hiding, playing and observing. The coordinated bed, cave, basket, perches and natural sisal scratching areas give indoor cats multiple activity and rest zones in one modular cat climbing wall system.
- COMFORTABLE FIT FOR SMALL TO MEDIUM CATS — Soft velvet-covered platforms provide comfortable landing and lounging surfaces, while natural sisal supports daily scratching. The platforms are optimized for kittens and small to medium cats; larger or heavier cats may find the resting areas compact.
- SPACE-SAVING CAT SHELVES FOR WALL-MOUNTED LAYOUTS — Arrange the modules around a window, bedroom corner or living room to free floor space and create separate levels for multi-cat homes. The neutral, modern design blends with home décor, and everyday cleanup is simple—vacuum or brush off loose cat hair.
A larger model plan with shelves between levels
Daiwa House’s cat-oriented model plan links a catwalk and staggered shelves with movement between floors. Its stated total floor area is 117.95 m² (35.67 tsubo): 64.08 m² on the first floor and 53.87 m² on the second. That is the area of this particular model plan, not a national average or a measure of what a cat-friendly home needs. Daiwa House: a home for living with cats
A constrained urban site built upward
Wakabayashi describes a three-storey urban home for two cats on a constrained site, using vertical circulation and steps while seeking an open interior feel. It is a builder’s account of one project rather than an independent evaluation. The example is a reminder that a compact footprint and the total size of a home are not the same design problem: the site, floors and household all matter. Choose built-ins, wall shelves or furniture that does double duty
Built-in or wall-mounted steps and catwalks can make a route without placing another large item on the floor, but they are not automatically the right choice in a rental or every room. Check lease terms and wall construction before drilling. Freestanding furniture is easier to reposition, though it still needs to fit the room and provide a stable route.
One shared-use example is MUJI Japan’s stacking shelf with round passage openings and optional wooden boards that create a place for a cat to rest inside the shelf. MUJI says the shelf uses the same oak material as its standard stacking shelf. This design pairs storage with passage and resting space, rather than treating cat furniture as a separate category. The page does not establish dimensions, load limits, availability in every market or suitability for every cat; check those details before selecting a configuration. Plan the entrance, litter area and balcony as part of the layout
Make the entry a deliberate transition
A front door opening directly onto a cat’s path can create an escape opportunity. Maison de Takaya includes an entry gate intended to help prevent a cat from dashing out as the door opens. In another home, consider where a gate could fit without obstructing people or making daily entry awkward; the project example does not specify a universal gate design or placement.
Measure the litter setup, not just the corner
Decide where the litter tray, access path and any related equipment will go before committing to shelves or storage. In the Maison de Takaya project, Resident First says the dedicated litter space accommodates a tray up to 47 cm × 70 cm. That is the stated maximum tray footprint for this project, not a recommended minimum or a size suitable for every cat or tray. The space also has a sensor-activated light and a dedicated outlet designed to support a smart litter product.

Treat balcony enclosure as a project-specific feature
The same rental example describes a balcony enclosed with grating to reduce escape or fall risk. A balcony arrangement depends on the actual building and enclosure; the example alone does not establish that any particular screen, gate or barrier will be safe or permitted elsewhere.

These examples do not describe one standard Japanese cat home. They range from a rental layout to a two-storey model plan and a custom three-storey urban house. Asu-haus, a design firm of Asahi Kasei Homes, describes its compact-home designs as approximately 25–35 tsubo and says it uses lower eave and ceiling heights, a void and living-room stairs among the ways to create an open feel. That is the firm’s stated design range and approach, not a national housing statistic. Asahi Kasei Homes / Asu-haus: small-scale design

The distinction matters when borrowing ideas: a catwalk that connects floors in a larger plan may not translate to a studio, while a storage shelf with an integrated passage may suit a room where floor area is scarce. Adapt the feature to the site and the household rather than copying a project whole.
A practical way to adapt these ideas at home
- Sketch the human route first. Mark the entrance, the route to frequently used areas, storage and the places where furniture must remain accessible.
- Mark daily-use cat areas. Set realistic locations for litter and other routine needs, checking equipment dimensions and access rather than choosing a spot by appearance alone.
- Draw a connected route in elevation. Identify where a cat could climb, pause and descend. Consider linked wall shelves or steps, a catwalk, a tower, or furniture with a passage and resting space.
- Check permanence and fit. Before installing anything, confirm lease permissions and wall construction. For furniture or equipment, verify dimensions, stability and suitability for the particular cat and room.
- Review the entrance and balcony separately. Think through what happens when the front door opens and whether any balcony arrangement is suitable for the actual building; do not assume a project photo is a safety specification.
These steps turn the examples into a planning framework, not a prescribed layout. The cited pages describe designs and features; they do not report controlled measurements of cat behavior or show that one material, height or floor area guarantees exercise, reduced stress or safety.
