The 2020 reconstruction offers a striking answer, but not a confirmed record size: for a hypothetical 16-metre (52.5-foot) Megalodon, researchers estimated a head about 4.65 metres long, a dorsal fin about 1.62 metres tall and a tail about 3.85 metres high. Those are modelled dimensions, not measurements taken from a complete fossil or proof that the largest Megalodon reached 16 metres.
What the 2020 study estimated
In a 2020 paper in Scientific Reports, Jack Cooper and colleagues reconstructed several body dimensions for the extinct shark Otodus megalodon. Their example at a chosen total length of 16 metres (52.5 feet) gives the scale of the animal the model describes:
| Dimension in the 16 m model | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Head length | 4.65 ± 0.42 m |
| Dorsal-fin height | 1.62 ± 0.36 m |
| Dorsal-fin width | 1.99 ± 0.3 m |
| Vertical distance from dorsal-fin tip to abdomen | 4.53 ± 0.56 m |
| Tail height | 3.85 ± 0.7 m |
These are the paper’s estimates for a modelled animal at 16 metres total length. The uncertainty values belong to the reported dimensions; they do not turn the assumed total length into a measured maximum. Read the 2020 paper.
Why Megalodon’s size has to be reconstructed
Megalodon is known almost entirely from fossils such as teeth. Like other sharks, it had a largely cartilaginous skeleton, which fossilizes less readily than bone. Researchers therefore cannot simply measure a complete skeleton to establish its full body length and proportions.

Earlier tooth-based estimates discussed by Cooper and colleagues put its length at roughly 15–18 metres, using the great white shark as an analogue. That range is background from previous work, not a maximum established by the 2020 reconstruction.
How researchers built the body model
Rather than relying only on the great white shark, the 2020 team measured five living lamniform sharks: great white, shortfin mako, longfin mako, salmon shark and porbeagle. They examined how anatomical dimensions and shape related to total length, then used the combined analogues to project Megalodon proportions at selected lengths, including 3, 8 and 16 metres.

- Safe material: Each tooth is crafted from safe, non-toxic materials, ensuring both safety and reliability whether used for play or display.
- Moderate size: Measuring at 5.5 inches, each tooth is appropriately sized for showcasing intricate details without occupying excessive space, making it an ideal display item.
- Versatile: This tooth model is not only suitable for display but can also serve as an educational tool or decorative piece, adding a unique charm and conversation starter to your space.
The authors reported no evidence of allometry strong enough to prevent their extrapolation. In other words, within the measurements they assessed, the relationship between body parts and total length did not change in a way they considered to invalidate projecting those proportions to a larger animal. The projection is still an extrapolation from living species, not a fossil measurement.
What the model check can—and cannot—show
The combined-analogue model had stronger statistical support than a great-white-only alternative and predicted 22 of 24 measured dimensions for a roughly 7-metre great white of known size. That is a check against a living shark with measurable proportions. It is not a direct validation against a complete Megalodon skeleton.

Is 16 metres Megalodon’s confirmed maximum?
No. The study selected 16 metres as a body length for its reconstruction and estimated the dimensions of an animal at that size. Its results do not establish that every Megalodon reached that length, or that 16 metres was the largest possible individual. A projected example and a confirmed maximum are different claims.

A 2024 paper, “White shark comparison reveals a slender body for the extinct megatooth shark, Otodus megalodon,” proposed an alternative, slender body outline. That means the stockier-looking reconstruction associated with the 2020 work should not be treated as settled consensus. The available information about the 2024 study does not establish a fair numerical comparison of its size estimates with the 2020 model.

The disagreement concerns how to reconstruct body form from an incomplete fossil record and comparisons with other sharks. It is not a dispute between measurements of two complete Megalodon skeletons: no such complete skeleton underlies these reconstructions.
