The “mysterious creature” photographed in the Tibetan Himalayas was a clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa). The two camera-trap images document the species in Jilong County, Tibet Autonomous Region, China—a first county-level record reported by the study’s authors, not the discovery of a new species.
What the cameras recorded
Researchers Yu Ding and colleagues deployed 200 infrared camera traps in Qomolangma National Nature Reserve. The cameras operated continuously from August 2023 through April 2024. Two cameras in the reserve’s core zone photographed a clouded leopard, on 9 September and 16 September 2023.
The report, published in Oryx in 2025, describes these as the first documented records of clouded leopard in Jilong County “to the best of our knowledge.” It is a short Conservation News report, not a population census. Read the report in Oryx.
Why this record is notable
Ding and co-authors place the Jilong record approximately 1,000 km from the species’ previously recognized habitat in Medog County, Tibet. Before this report, they describe recent records in four Chinese counties: Medog in Tibet, and Gongshan, Yingjiang, and Mengla in Yunnan. The new images therefore extend documented occurrence into a county where the authors had not found a previous record.

The report also places Jilong approximately 50 km from clouded-leopard records in Nepal’s Langtang National Park and approximately 300 km from records in Nepal’s Annapurna Conservation Area. The authors suggest the region “may serve as a migration corridor.” That is a possibility for further investigation, not evidence that a migration route has been demonstrated.
What two photographs do—and do not—establish
The images confirm that at least one clouded leopard was present where and when the cameras recorded it. They do not show how many animals live in the area, whether a breeding population is established, or how the animal reached Jilong. A single animal’s presence cannot map the species’ distribution across the intervening landscape.

To test whether the area supports a resident population or connects habitats, researchers would need broader, sustained monitoring across multiple sites, ideally with repeat detections that can establish patterns over time. Evidence of breeding or movement would require additional observations; the two images alone cannot supply it.
Conservation status: Vulnerable, not Critically Endangered
The Oryx report says the clouded leopard is categorized as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. A secondary story about the sighting called it Critically Endangered and gave an estimate of fewer than 6,000 adults, but those claims are not supported by the primary report. The camera-trap record itself provides no population estimate.

The study notes that clouded-leopard habitat in China has faced severe pressure. It cites an estimated 97% decline in key habitat from 2000 to 2020, attributing that figure to Petersen and colleagues’ 2020 study in Global Ecology and Conservation. This is a habitat-loss estimate cited by the report, not a measured decline in the number of clouded leopards at Jilong.

Infrared camera traps can record animals that are difficult to observe directly, including nocturnal or elusive species. In this survey, the cameras documented clouded-leopard presence without requiring researchers to see or capture the animal. The report does not name a camera brand or model, and the findings are not an endorsement of any consumer trail camera.
