California Red sheep are a medium-sized, naturally hornless breed developed in California from Tunis and Barbados ancestry. They are recognizable by reddish hair on the head and legs, pendulous ears, and beige-to-oatmeal wool. The breed is used for both meat and fleece; the registry describes its wool as suited to hand spinning and weaving.
What are California Red sheep?
The California Red is a domestic sheep breed developed from crossbred animals. The California Red Sheep Registry says the project began in Davis, California, in the early 1970s, when Dr. Glenn Spurlock crossed Tunis and Barbados sheep. The initial aim was to create a larger-framed, wool-less sheep, but the wool-less trait was not achieved. Aime and Paulette Soulier later acquired crossbreds and, alongside other breeders, selectively developed the California Red (California Red Sheep Registry history; Oklahoma State University breed profile).
The registry describes California Reds as medium-sized, naturally hornless sheep with wool-free faces and lower legs. Their long, pendulous ears are another recognizable feature.
What do California Red sheep look like?
Lambs are described by the registry as cinnamon or rust colored. As they mature, the fleece develops toward beige or oatmeal, while reddish hair remains on the head and legs. The change may show around 12–18 months or earlier depending on shearing, according to the registry; that timing is a breed description, not a guarantee for every animal.

What is California Red wool like?
The registry describes the fleece as silky, beige to oatmeal, and fine-to-medium in handle, with hairs intermixed in shades from gold to dark cinnamon. Its stated ideal annual staple length is 3–6 inches, with average fleece weights of 4–7 pounds. These figures describe the registry’s standard and breed profile; they are not a promise of an individual sheep’s yield.

Hand spinners and weavers are among the fleece’s intended users, according to the registry. A drop spindle is one optional, general-purpose way to spin wool; it is not a breed-specific requirement. The registry says sheep are usually shorn once a year, with timing depending on region, weather, and wool-market needs.
Are California Reds raised for meat or milk?
The breed is described by its registry as having both meat and fiber uses. The registry also says its milk has been used in small or home dairy operations. Claims about meat taste or tenderness, fatness, and milk solids are qualitative registry descriptions; the evidence available here does not establish independent comparative measurements. They should not be treated as a guarantee of product characteristics.

What are their temperament and care needs?
The registry characterizes California Reds as calm and easy to handle when treated quietly, and describes favorable lambing and maternal behavior. It also calls them easy keepers, stating that balanced pasture grass and/or hay can support market weight without heavy grain. These are registry descriptions, not assurances about every flock or a substitute for individualized feeding, veterinary, and management advice.
As with other sheep, actual needs depend on the animal, forage, climate, health, and production goals. Consult a veterinarian or qualified sheep adviser for a flock-specific ration and care plan.

How do registry standards and foundation rules work?
The registry’s standard of type describes an ideal California Red: a medium, broad body; wool-free head and lower legs; pendulous ears; and beige or oatmeal fleece with reddish hair. The stated 3–6-inch annual wool growth and 4–7-pound average fleece are ideals in that standard, not necessarily registration requirements.
The registry also describes a rebuilding program that allows approved new foundation stock and keeps a separate lineage registry for foundation ancestors. Its page specifies ancestry ranges involving Tunis and Barbados Blackbelly sheep and says American Barbados bloodlines are not acceptable within the described program. Because registry policies can change, confirm current eligibility and registration requirements directly with the California Red Sheep Registry rebuilding plan before buying or registering animals.
