Successful Farming’s photo feature introduces Gibson Manufacturing’s tractor range; its companion history describes the progression from a small garden tractor to full-sized agricultural machines.
What “Gibson’s Grand Horses” refers to
Dave Mowitz’s Successful Farming / Ageless Iron feature, published May 2, 2014, presents photographs and captions of Gibson tractors. The phrase “grand horses” is a play on the machines’ horsepower. The feature’s introduction reads, “Here is a collection of Gibson grand horses.” Read the 2014 feature.
How Gibson’s tractor line developed
Successful Farming’s companion article reports that Wilber Gibson founded Gibson Manufacturing in Longmont, Colorado, in 1946. The company began with the Model A and expanded its range to include small garden tractors and larger agricultural models. The publisher reports that production ended in 1958. These historical details come from the publication’s January 24, 2013 article, rather than independently verified company records. Read the companion article, “11 Gibson’s Antique Tractors”.
The same 2013 feature estimates that more than 60,000 tractors were built and sold in North America and 26 foreign countries. That is the publication’s estimate, not an independently confirmed production census.

Selected Gibson models and reported specifications
The 2013 article gives different amounts of technical detail for different models. The table preserves the article’s terms for horsepower rather than treating the figures as directly interchangeable.
| Model | Role or distinction | Engine and reported power | Other reported details |
| Model A | First production tractor described | Wisconsin Model AEH, 6 horsepower | Three-speed transmission |
| Model D | Small tractor in the early line | Wisconsin AEH, 6 horsepower | Transmission details not stated in the feature |
| Model SD | Small tractor in the early line | Wisconsin single-cylinder engine, 5 horsepower | Transmission details not stated in the feature |
| Super D | Early model noted for its steering-wheel design | Engine and horsepower not stated in the feature | Transmission details not stated in the feature |
| Super D2 | Later small tractor | Wisconsin TF, two-cylinder, 12 horsepower | Three-speed transmission |
| E-series: E, EF, EW, EWF | Included row-crop and wide-front configurations | Specific engine and horsepower details not stated in the feature | Variants reflect differing tractor configurations |
| Model H | First full-sized Gibson tractor | Hercules four-cylinder; manufacturer-rated at 24 horsepower | Other specifications vary by model and are not stated here |
| Model T | Introduced in 1949 | Hercules six-cylinder; reported at 40 belt horsepower | Do not treat belt horsepower as the same rating label used for the Model H |
| Model I | Described as Gibson’s largest tractor | Hercules six-cylinder, rated at 40 horsepower | The article does not label this figure as belt horsepower |
How to read the horsepower figures
The feature uses different descriptions for different models: it calls the H’s 24 horsepower a manufacturer rating, reports the T at 40 belt horsepower, and gives the I a 40-horsepower rating without specifying belt horsepower. Those labels should remain distinct; the article does not provide a common test method or additional information that would justify converting the figures into a single apples-to-apples comparison.

A naming difference in the 2014 feature
The 2014 photo feature says Gibson expanded to include “the Models D, SD, Super SD, and many more.” Its companion article separately describes the Super D and Super D2. These are the names as the two features present them; the 2014 wording should not be silently changed to match the companion article.

Together, the articles portray a manufacturer whose range grew from a small garden tractor into multiple configurations and full-sized machines. They identify some engines, power figures, transmission details, and model distinctions, but do not supply a complete specification set for every model. Their historical dates, technical details, and production estimate are secondary reporting by Successful Farming / Ageless Iron, not verified here against Gibson company records.
