Most healthy cats do not need a daily vitamin. If your cat eats a commercial food with a nutritional adequacy statement showing that it is complete and balanced for the right life stage, that food should already provide the vitamins required for normal health.
Supplements may help when a veterinarian identifies a deficiency, illness, poor absorption, malnutrition, or an incomplete diet. Adding vitamins “just in case” can backfire: vitamins A and D, in particular, can become toxic at excessive doses. Here are nine vitamins that matter in feline nutrition—and when supplementation may make sense.
The 9 vitamins cats need
“Best” does not mean that every cat should receive all nine in a pill. These are essential nutrients or vitamins with a recognized clinical role when a cat’s diet or health prevents it from getting enough.
| Vitamin | What it does | Routine supplement for a healthy cat? |
|---|---|---|
| A | Vision, skin, growth, reproduction, and immune function | No; excess can damage bones |
| B1 (thiamine) | Nervous-system function and energy metabolism | No, if the diet is complete |
| B2 (riboflavin) | Energy production and cellular metabolism | No |
| B3 (niacin) | Processing protein, fat, and carbohydrates | No |
| B6 (pyridoxine) | Metabolism of amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids | No |
| B9 (folate) | DNA and amino-acid metabolism | Only for a diagnosed need |
| B12 (cobalamin) | Metabolism and nerve function | Sometimes, under veterinary guidance |
| D | Calcium, phosphorus, and bone regulation | No; overdose can be dangerous |
| E | Antioxidant protection for cell membranes | Only for a specific dietary or medical reason |
1. Vitamin A
Vitamin A supports vision, growth, reproduction, skin, and immune function. Cats need preformed vitamin A from animal-derived ingredients. Unlike people and many other animals, they cannot depend on converting plant beta-carotene—such as that found in carrots—into enough usable vitamin A.

A complete cat food normally supplies the right amount, so extra vitamin A is rarely appropriate. Chronic excess can cause abnormal bone growth and other skeletal changes. Repeatedly feeding raw liver, cod-liver oil, or a vitamin-A supplement is a common way to create the problem.
2. Vitamin B1 (thiamine)
Thiamine is essential for the nervous system, energy metabolism, appetite, and growth. Cats require considerably more thiamine than dogs—approximately four times as much, according to the FDA.
Raw freshwater fish and clams can contain thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys thiamine. Cooking destroys thiaminase, and properly formulated commercial fish-based foods are not equivalent to feeding raw fish as a staple.
Deficiency can cause poor appetite, vomiting, weight loss, weakness, a dropped or flexed neck, poor coordination, circling, and seizures. It can be fatal without treatment but is generally reversible when recognized promptly. Any cat showing neurological signs needs urgent veterinary care.
There is also an important quality-control caveat: on March 13, 2026, the FDA warned that eight tested lots of Quest Cat Food contained extremely low or undetectable thiamine despite being labeled as complete diets. A nutritional adequacy statement matters, but it cannot make a product immune to formulation, processing, or manufacturing errors. Check FDA alerts if your cat’s food is involved in a recall or advisory.
3. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
Riboflavin helps cats release energy from protein, fat, and carbohydrates and supports normal cellular metabolism. Complete commercial foods generally provide enough.

A standalone riboflavin product is not a sensible general supplement. Signs such as weight loss, poor appetite, or gastrointestinal upset have many possible causes and should prompt an examination rather than guessed vitamin treatment.
4. Vitamin B3 (niacin)
Niacin helps the body process fat, carbohydrates, and protein. Cats cannot make substantial amounts of niacin from tryptophan, so they need to obtain their requirement from food.
Deficiency is unusual in cats eating complete food but has been reported in kittens fed purified diets without enough niacin. Poor growth, diarrhea, weight loss, and severe illness can result. Do not give a human niacin product unless your veterinarian specifically prescribes it; the dose and additional ingredients may be unsuitable.
5. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
Vitamin B6 is involved in the metabolism of amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids. It is normally included in nutritionally complete cat food.
There is no routine reason to add it to a healthy cat’s meals. If a deficiency is suspected, the veterinarian should first review the diet and look for the underlying condition rather than treating nonspecific symptoms with a supplement.
6. Vitamin B9 (folate)
Folate supports DNA synthesis and amino-acid metabolism. It is one of the B vitamins ordinarily supplied by complete cat food.

Veterinarians may test folate along with vitamin B12 when a cat has an intestinal, pancreatic, or malabsorptive disorder. An abnormal test is a medical finding, not a reason to give a general-purpose multivitamin without guidance.
7. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)
Vitamin B12 supports metabolism and nerve function. Cats with gastrointestinal, pancreatic, metabolic, or certain genetic disorders may not absorb or use enough of it.
A veterinarian may prescribe cyanocobalamin orally or by injection, depending on the cat’s condition and treatment plan. Improvement can take several weeks. Weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and poor appetite can occur with B12 deficiency, but they also occur with many other diseases, so symptoms alone cannot establish that B12 is the answer.
8. Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps regulate calcium and phosphorus and contributes to bone health. Cats do not obtain a meaningful supply simply by lying in sunlight; dietary vitamin D is the relevant source, and a complete food should contain an appropriate amount.
Vitamin D has a narrow safety margin. Too much can cause dangerously high calcium and phosphorus levels, mineralization of soft tissues, kidney injury, and death. Sources include supplements, vitamin-D-containing products, and cholecalciferol rodenticides.
After a possible exposure, vomiting, weakness, loss of appetite, excessive thirst, or increased urination requires immediate veterinary or animal-poison-control advice. Do not wait to see whether symptoms develop.

9. Vitamin E
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes. Deficiency can affect skeletal muscle, heart muscle, the liver, and body fat.
Feeding large quantities of canned tuna as a main diet has been associated with vitamin-E deficiency and pansteatitis, also called yellow-fat disease. Tuna intended as an occasional treat is not the same as a nutritionally complete tuna-based diet, but tuna should not replace balanced cat food.

Very large amounts can interfere with the absorption or function of other fat-soluble vitamins, including A, D, and K.
What about vitamins C, K, biotin, and pantothenic acid?
These nutrients matter, but they are often misrepresented as must-have add-ons:
- Vitamin C: Cats can synthesize it, so it is not generally an essential supplement. Extra vitamin C may be a poor choice for a cat with a history of calcium oxalate urinary stones because its breakdown can increase urinary oxalate.
- Vitamin K: Cats need it for normal blood clotting, but intestinal bacteria typically provide adequate amounts. Deficiency is more likely with certain illnesses or disruptions to normal gut bacteria.
- Biotin and pantothenic acid: Cats require both, but complete food normally supplies them. A healthy cat does not routinely need either as a standalone product.
When might a cat need a vitamin supplement?
Supplementation can be reasonable when there is a defined nutritional or medical reason, such as:
- a homemade, raw, or otherwise incomplete diet;
- a laboratory-confirmed deficiency;
- intestinal, pancreatic, liver, kidney, or other disease affecting digestion, absorption, metabolism, or nutrient losses;
- prolonged poor appetite or malnutrition; or
- a veterinary-formulated nutritional plan for a specific condition.
Homemade diets are especially easy to balance incorrectly. Meat alone does not provide everything a cat needs, and internet recipes may omit or miscalculate critical nutrients. If home preparation is medically necessary, ask for a recipe from a veterinarian with nutrition expertise rather than adding a supermarket multivitamin to meat.

How to choose a cat vitamin safely
- Define the goal. Ask the veterinarian what problem the product is intended to address. A dull coat, lethargy, or picky eating does not prove a vitamin deficiency.
- Read the complete ingredient list. Check the dose and look for minerals, iron, herbs, stimulants, or other active ingredients hidden behind a “multivitamin” label.
- Choose a cat-specific product. Human supplements can contain iron, vitamin D, xylitol, garlic, stimulants, or concentrated herbs that may harm cats. Dog products are not automatically interchangeable with cat products; the species have different nutrient requirements.
- Check the food label first. Find the nutritional adequacy statement. It should say the food is complete and balanced for your cat’s species and life stage—growth, adult maintenance, gestation/lactation, or all life stages. “AAFCO-approved” is misleading: AAFCO does not approve, certify, or endorse individual brands. It establishes nutrient profiles and feeding protocols used in regulated labeling.
- Avoid nutrient stacking. A multivitamin, liver treat, cod-liver oil, fortified treat, and prescription diet may duplicate vitamins A or D and other nutrients.
- Follow the prescribed dose. Never assume that doubling a dose will work faster. Extra is particularly risky with vitamins A and D.
- Store it like medication. Keep flavored chews, tablets, capsules, and bottles locked away. A cat that eats an entire container may need emergency treatment.
Claims to ignore
- “Every cat needs a daily multivitamin.” Not if the cat is healthy and eating complete, balanced food.
- “Natural vitamins cannot hurt.” Raw liver, cod-liver oil, and concentrated supplements can cause vitamin toxicity.
- “Carrots provide enough vitamin A.” Cats need preformed vitamin A and cannot rely on plant beta-carotene conversion.
- “Sunlight supplies vitamin D.” Sunbathing is not a substitute for dietary vitamin D.
- “AAFCO-approved” guarantees the brand. AAFCO does not test or endorse individual pet-food brands.
- “Pet supplements are regulated exactly like human supplements.” FDA does not use a separate DSHEA dietary-supplement classification for animal products. Depending on the product and claims, it is regulated as animal food or may be considered a new animal drug.
- “Dog vitamins are interchangeable with cat vitamins.” Cats and dogs have different nutrient requirements, including cats’ need for preformed vitamin A and taurine.
When to call the veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian before starting a supplement if your cat is losing weight, vomiting, has diarrhea, is eating poorly, seems weak, or has a chronic disease. Seek urgent help for seizures, severe incoordination, suspected rodenticide or supplement ingestion, or signs such as repeated vomiting, extreme thirst, and increased urination after possible vitamin-D exposure. The right treatment is usually finding the cause—not masking it with a multivitamin.
FAQ
Does my cat need a daily multivitamin?
Usually not. A healthy cat eating complete and balanced food formulated for the appropriate life stage generally receives the vitamins it needs. A supplement should have a specific veterinary reason.
Can I give my cat a human multivitamin?
Do not do so unless your veterinarian directs it. Human products may contain dangerous amounts of iron or vitamins A and D, as well as xylitol, garlic, stimulants, or concentrated herbs.
Is vitamin B12 safe for cats?
Veterinarians commonly use cobalamin, or vitamin B12, for cats with documented or suspected deficiency related to intestinal, pancreatic, metabolic, or genetic disease. The dose and route—oral or injectable—should come from your veterinarian.

What should I do if my cat eats too many vitamins?
Call your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service immediately, especially if the product contains vitamins A or D, iron, or other active ingredients. Keep the packaging available and do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional tells you to.
The Bottom Line
The best vitamin plan for most cats is a complete, balanced diet—not an extra pill. Supplements have a place when a veterinarian identifies a deficiency, an incomplete diet, or a condition affecting nutrition. Before buying one, check the food’s adequacy statement, review every ingredient, avoid human products, and never combine supplements casually.
