What happened in Florida?
Oxitec tested OX5034, a genetically engineered strain of Aedes aegypti, an invasive mosquito species that can transmit dengue, Zika and chikungunya. EPA says the Florida field test began in late April 2021. A 2021 fact-check reported an announced plan to release approximately 150,000 mosquitoes across six Florida locations, but the sources do not establish the final cumulative number actually released. EPA’s 2021 account and the 2021 report of the announced plan describe different parts of the story.
How was the mosquito modification intended to work?
The released mosquitoes were engineered males. EPA describes the inherited OX5034 trait as allowing male offspring to survive while preventing female offspring from surviving. Repeated releases were intended to reduce the local Aedes aegypti population. The trial measured mosquito population suppression; it did not demonstrate a reduction in human disease. What oversight and monitoring applied?
EPA regulated the engineered mosquitoes under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and issued an experimental use permit (EUP). Its permit account describes weekly sampling and monitoring, restrictions intended to limit exposure to potential environmental sources of tetracycline, and a requirement to stop releases and apply adulticide and larvicide if an engineered female were detected. In March 2022, EPA said Oxitec had not reported adverse effects from Florida field tests conducted since April 2021. That dated report is not proof that every possible risk was absent. Are genetically modified mosquitoes being released in the United States now?
No U.S. release is currently authorized under the expired Oxitec EUP. EPA says the permit ended on April 30, 2024, and its May 27, 2026 fact check states: “No releases are currently authorized in the United States.” EPA also says it is not aware of any U.S. releases after the permit expired. Why the 150,000 figure needs a qualification
The figure was reported in 2021 as the approximate number in an announced plan for six Florida locations. It is not an audited or otherwise established final release total. The available sources do not settle how many mosquitoes were ultimately released, so the headline figure should not be read as a confirmed count.
