Cal-Maine Foods disclosed on April 2, 2024, that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, or bird flu) had been detected at a facility in Parmer County, Texas. The company temporarily stopped production there and depopulated affected poultry. Its fiscal 2025 annual report later said the affected Texas and Kansas facilities were fully operational.
Why did Cal-Maine halt egg production in Texas?
Cal-Maine said the Parmer County facility tested positive for HPAI. Production temporarily ceased as the company followed USDA protocols. The April 2, 2024, release did not identify how the virus entered the facility, so its source is not established in the company’s disclosure.
Cal-Maine reported that approximately 1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 pullets were depopulated. The company said those birds represented approximately 3.6% of its total flock as of March 2, 2024; that percentage refers to the flock on that specific date.
The operational response at the affected facility was separate from the company’s effort to limit customer disruption: Cal-Maine said it was arranging production at other facilities. Its release did not quantify any broader effect on egg supply or prices.

Were eggs recalled after the Texas bird flu detection?
In its April 2, 2024, release, Cal-Maine said no eggs had been recalled and that there was no known HPAI risk associated with eggs then on the market. Those were the company’s statements about the situation at that time, not a guarantee about every later event.
Is the Texas facility still closed?
Cal-Maine’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K later said the Kansas and Texas facilities affected in fiscal 2024 “are now fully operational.” This is the company’s reported status in that annual filing, not an independent inspection of the facility.

What does bird flu mean for poultry and people?
USDA APHIS says avian influenza can spread between birds through direct contact and through contaminated materials, including manure, egg flats, crates, equipment, clothing, shoes, and hands. APHIS says there is no treatment for HPAI and that depopulating affected and exposed poultry is the way to stop the disease. These control measures explain why a detection at a poultry facility can lead to depopulation and a production pause.
For human surveillance context, CDC’s October 2, 2026, update—covering information through September 26, 2026—said its systems showed no indicators of unusual influenza activity in people, including avian influenza A(H5). That is a dated finding about human surveillance; it does not establish that HPAI is absent in animals or rule out future risk.

What did Cal-Maine say about preventing future outbreaks?
In its April 2, 2024, release, Cal-Maine said: “The Company continues to work closely with federal, state and local government officials and focused industry groups to mitigate the risk of future outbreaks and effectively manage the response.” The release also stated: “The Company remains dedicated to robust biosecurity programs across its locations; however, no farm is immune from HPAI.” These are company statements, not independently verified findings.
USDA APHIS describes federal poultry-response efforts that include biosecurity, indemnification, repopulation, supply, and research. The agency’s program information may change over time.
