If a groundhog is in your yard, keep pets away, protect the plants or structure it is targeting, and avoid sealing any burrow until you know it is no longer occupied. Sturdy metal mesh that blocks both climbing and digging is usually the most reliable way to protect a garden. Trapping, removal, and relocation rules depend on where you live.
What to do first when you spot a groundhog
- Keep dogs from chasing or cornering it. A cornered groundhog may bite, and a pursuit can injure either animal. Give it space to retreat.
- Identify what is being damaged. Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, eat plant material and may burrow under sheds or other structures. If you are not sure which animal is responsible, a trail camera aimed at the damage site can help identify it; see Michigan DNR guidance on woodchucks.
- Remove easy food access. Pick up fallen fruit and garden produce, and secure pet or livestock food. Michigan DNR identifies accessible food and secure places to den as key sources of conflict.
- Choose a response based on the problem. Protect garden beds with fencing; treat a burrow under a building as a separate issue. Do not trap, relocate, or close an occupied burrow without first checking local rules and the animal’s status.
How to keep groundhogs out of a garden
Physical exclusion is generally more dependable than trying to frighten an established groundhog away. The barrier needs to address both digging and climbing. University of Maryland Extension recommends a strong four-foot fence with 12 inches buried; its groundhog guidance also describes adding a low electric wire outside the fence. Rutgers NJAES recommends a buried L-shaped apron and a top that is outward-bent or difficult to climb. These are different ways of applying the same principle: close off the route over and under the fence.
- Use sturdy metal mesh around the garden or the most vulnerable beds.
- Plan for roughly 3–4 feet of fence above ground and about 10–12 inches of mesh below ground; the exact design depends on the guidance you follow and the site.
- Where digging under the fence is a concern, extend mesh outward underground as an apron or use an outward-bent lower edge.
- Keep fallen produce and other food sources picked up so the garden is less inviting.
A motion-activated sprinkler may help protect a small area, but it is an optional supplement, not a guaranteed solution. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission notes that motion-detecting sprinklers can deter groundhogs from small areas; Michigan DNR cautions that commercial deterrents may have only brief or limited effect. Do not rely on a repellent or scare device alone to make an established animal leave.
What to do about a burrow under a shed, deck, porch, or foundation
First determine whether the burrow is active. A groundhog’s tunnel system may have several entrances, so blocking one visible hole can trap an animal or prompt it to dig elsewhere. Do not fill or seal an entrance while the animal may still be inside, and consider whether young could be present before attempting eviction.

For a burrow beneath a structure, perimeter exclusion and a carefully planned one-way exit may be part of a professional eviction. Rutgers NJAES describes using one-way exits for at least two weeks before sealing entrances, but timing and methods need to account for local wildlife guidance and seasonal risks; do not attempt eviction during hibernation or breeding periods. If the burrow is complex or the animal’s status is unclear, contact a licensed nuisance-wildlife professional. Rutgers’ groundhog control guidance provides further detail.
A burrow does not automatically mean a foundation is in serious danger. North Carolina Wildlife says groundhog burrows can have up to 50 feet of total tunnel length, but typically do not cause significant damage to building foundations. Maryland Extension reports tunnels may reach five feet deep and underground networks may cover 8 to 66 feet; those are descriptive figures, not a prediction of damage at a particular home.

Can you trap and relocate a groundhog?
There is no single nationwide rule that makes relocation legal everywhere. The rules differ by state and may also be affected by local regulations, so check your state wildlife agency and municipal requirements before trapping or moving an animal. For example, North Carolina prohibits relocation, Michigan says trapped woodchucks cannot be moved off the property, and Maryland requires landowner permission before release into suitable habitat and flags timing concerns in spring and late autumn. These examples do not determine what is allowed where you live.
If trapping or removal is necessary, a licensed nuisance-wildlife professional can help with the method, timing, and applicable rules. Do not assume a live-trapped groundhog can simply be released elsewhere.

Why groundhogs choose a yard
Groundhogs are attracted to accessible plant food and places where they can make secure burrows. Maryland Extension says a groundhog typically travels no more than 150 feet from its den to feed, which helps explain why a nearby garden can be a regular target. It also reports that a litter is typically two to six young, so the possibility of young matters when considering an occupied burrow. Michigan DNR summarizes the prevention approach this way: “Preventing woodchucks from accessing food and secure areas to make burrows is the most effective way to reduce conflicts.”
