The right vaccine plan depends on your dog’s age, medical and vaccination history, location, and exposure; requirements for a local walk are not the same as requirements for daycare or international travel.
Which vaccinations should a dog have before going out in public?
There is no single vaccine checklist that applies to every dog or every outing. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) classifies vaccines as core or noncore and recommends considering a dog’s history, health, location, and likely exposures with a veterinarian. Local law and the rules of a particular destination may add requirements.
Core vaccines and the AAHA guidance
AAHA’s 2022 canine vaccination guidelines, whose guideline page says it was updated in 2024, identify vaccines for canine distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and rabies as core. The detailed recommendations table also lists leptospirosis as core, while the brief summary foregrounds the first four. Ask your veterinarian how the table and summary apply to your dog and local circumstances rather than assuming the same schedule is right for every animal.
AAHA’s detailed schedule recommends at least three combination-vaccine doses for puppies 16 weeks and younger, given between 6 and 16 weeks of age and spaced 2–4 weeks apart. For dogs older than 16 weeks starting that combination series, it lists two doses 2–4 weeks apart. The table lists a booster within a year after the initial series, followed by boosters at three-year intervals for that combination vaccine. For leptospirosis, it lists two initial doses 2–4 weeks apart and annual boosters after the dose within a year. These are guideline recommendations, not a substitute for your veterinarian’s advice, a vaccine product’s label, or applicable law.

Additional vaccines depend on exposure
AAHA lists Lyme disease, Bordetella, canine influenza, and rattlesnake toxoid among noncore vaccine choices for some dogs. They are not automatically necessary for every public outing. Ask your veterinarian whether your dog’s routine or destination makes any of them appropriate—for example, daycare or boarding, dog shows, travel, regional disease risks, or exposure to local wildlife.
What identification should your dog wear?
Use more than one practical route for identification. A collar ID tag with current contact information is visible to someone who finds your dog; a microchip provides another way to identify them. A microchip is only useful if its associated pet and contact details are current, so check the registry information when your phone number or address changes.

CDC’s pet-travel guidance advises microchipping pets and keeping their contact and pet information updated. Local governments may also require a license or particular tag, and rules differ by location. The cited guidance does not establish one universal tag format or legal requirement for ordinary outings, so check the rules where you live.
How should you handle a leash and outing rules?
The American Veterinary Medical Association advises: “Use a leash in public to maintain control of your dog.” Keep your dog supervised and check the destination’s rules before you go; public spaces, dog parks, and organized venues can have different requirements. CDC likewise recommends keeping pets on a leash or in a carrier while traveling.

- Before a routine outing: Confirm your dog’s vaccinations are current under the veterinarian’s plan and use a leash and current ID.
- Before a venue visit: Check the venue’s entry rules as well as local requirements; do not assume an ordinary park’s rules apply to daycare or boarding.
- Before travel: Check the destination’s animal regulations and carry relevant documents, including rabies-vaccination proof when applicable.
What changes for travel or crossing a border?
CDC’s pet-travel guidance, dated April 15, 2026, advises checking destination regulations and bringing items such as water, food, a bowl, leash, waste bags, medication, first-aid supplies, and relevant travel documents. It also recommends supervising pets, avoiding contact with stray or wild animals, avoiding stagnant or discolored water, and checking for ticks after outdoor outings. These are travel-safety recommendations, not all vaccination or identification mandates.
International entry is a separate regulatory question from a local outing. Check both the destination’s rules and the rules for returning home before departure. CDC’s dog-import FAQ, dated August 27, 2026, says dogs entering or returning to the United States need a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, with other requirements depending on travel history. Some applicable documentation requires a microchip and rabies vaccination in a particular sequence. Do not apply those import rules to a routine walk; confirm the current requirements for your dog’s travel history and route.
