A Bichon Frise is larger and sturdier, with a playful, outgoing profile—but its curly coat also needs daily brushing and regular trims. Neither is a low-maintenance choice. Consider grooming, time alone, and how gently people in your household can handle a small dog, then meet the individual dogs you are considering.
How do Maltese and Bichon Frise compare?
Both breeds are affectionate companion dogs, but they differ in size, coat texture, and the way their breed profiles describe their temperaments. The figures below come from American Kennel Club (AKC) breed profiles and standards; they describe the breed, not a guaranteed size or personality for every dog.
| Feature | Maltese | Bichon Frise |

| Size | AKC profile: under 7 pounds and 7–9 inches tall. The breed standard prefers 4–6 pounds and specifies under 7 pounds. Which is smaller, a Maltese or Bichon Frise?
The Maltese is smaller in the AKC breed descriptions: under 7 pounds and 7–9 inches tall, compared with the Bichon Frise at 12–18 pounds and 9.5–11.5 inches at the withers. A very small dog may be easier to carry, but its size also means household members need to handle it gently. Breed ranges are not predictions for a particular puppy or adult dog.
Which dog needs more grooming?
Both need regular coat care, but the routines are not identical. The Maltese has long, straight hair that can tangle and mat; the Bichon’s curly coat can mat as it grows and needs routine trims. Daily brushing is recommended for both, so neither breed is a good fit if you want a wash-and-go coat.

Maltese coat routine
- Brush or comb gently every day to help prevent tangles and mats.
- Plan for regular baths and coat conditioning, along with nail care and ear checks.
- Include routine dental care. The AKC notes that Maltese can be prone to dental disease in old age.
Bichon Frise coat routine
- Brush every day and arrange routine trims. The AKC says trims are needed every four to six weeks to avoid uncontrolled growth and matting; the article does not specify a region or edition.
- Trim nails and brush teeth at least two to three times a week, as the AKC recommends.
- Check and clean floppy ears regularly.
A small-dog slicker brush and a metal comb can support daily brushing for either coat, but tools do not replace Bichon trims, bathing, dental care, or the rest of each dog’s routine.
Which breed is better for families or homes with other pets?
The Bichon Frise’s larger, sturdier build and social profile may make it a more practical match for a lively household. The AKC describes Bichons as good family companions, including with children, and generally compatible with other dogs. Maltese are tiny and often better suited to homes where older children can handle them carefully. The AKC describes Maltese as strongly attached to people and notes they may struggle with long periods alone.

These are breed tendencies, not guarantees. Supervise children and dogs together, teach children to handle a small dog gently, and consider the temperament and history of the individual dog. Socialization matters for either breed, particularly when introducing a dog to unfamiliar people or other animals.
What are training and alone-time needs like?
A Maltese may be affectionate and eager to be with its people but can show a stubborn streak. Consistent, reward-based training and quality time are important. A Bichon is described as a biddable social learner; basic training and early socialization help it navigate a range of people and situations. Neither description means every dog will learn at the same pace.
Rank #3
Think carefully about your daily schedule before choosing. The AKC notes that Maltese may struggle if left alone for long periods. The cited Bichon profile describes the breed as adaptable, but that should not be taken as proof that any individual dog is comfortable being left alone for extended stretches.
Are Maltese or Bichon Frise dogs hypoallergenic?
Do not assume either breed will be allergy-free. Breed descriptions of low shedding do not establish whether a particular person will react to a particular dog. If allergies are a concern, spend time with the individual dog and consult a medical professional before making a commitment.

What should you ask about health and ongoing care?
For Bichons, the Bichon Frise Club of America says responsible breeders should, at minimum, test breeding dogs’ eyes, hips, and patellas. This is club guidance, not proof that every breeder performs those tests or a substitute for veterinary advice. Ask what screening was done and request the relevant records.
For either breed, ask how the dog has been cared for, what grooming and dental routines it is used to, and whether there are veterinary records to review. The cited material does not establish a controlled comparison of health outcomes, training difficulty, allergy outcomes, or ownership costs, so it cannot support a universal health or cost winner.

How to choose between a Maltese and a Bichon Frise
- Be realistic about grooming. Decide whether daily brushing—and, for a Bichon, trims every four to six weeks—is a routine you can maintain.
- Match size to the household. Consider whether everyone who will interact with the dog can handle a tiny Maltese gently, or whether a sturdier Bichon is a better practical fit.
- Plan for companionship. Consider how long the dog will be alone on a typical day, especially if you are drawn to the people-focused Maltese.
- Meet the individual dog. Breed profiles offer tendencies, not promises. Look at how the dog responds to your household and ask about its socialization and care history.
The AKC Maltese standard says, “For all his diminutive size, the Maltese seems to be without fear.” That line captures the breed standard’s characterization, not a guarantee about any dog. The AKC Bichon profile also notes a saying among Bichon lovers: “There are no strangers, just friends they haven’t met yet.” Neither description replaces meeting the dog you may bring home.
