For everyday dirt, clean only the affected area: lift away loose debris with a gentle brush, then wipe the spot with a damp, soft cloth or towel. Brush frequency depends on coat type, and a white coat alone is not a reason to use whitening products or bathe more often.
What to do after a walk or meal
- Check the usual trouble spots. Look at the paws, belly, beard, and any area that picked up dirt or food.
- Remove loose debris first. Brush gently with a tool suited to your dog’s coat. For mud, sand, pine needles, or other surface dirt, dab or wipe the area with a damp towel. The American Kennel Club’s home-grooming guidance recommends damp-towel cleanup as needed; a disposable dog wipe is optional.
- Let the coat dry. Avoid rubbing hard, especially around the face or on tangled hair.
Regular brushing can remove dirt and debris and help distribute natural oils, according to the AKC. Choose a brush or comb for the coat rather than the dog’s size or color.
Choose a brush and schedule for the coat
| Coat type | Useful tool examples | Brushing guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Curly, non-shedding | Slicker brush | VCA says long, silky, or curly coats need daily brushing to help prevent tangles. |
| Medium-length, shedding | Comb or stiff-bristle brush | Frequency varies with the individual coat; inspect for loose hair and tangles. |
| Smooth, short | Flexible grooming glove or short-bristle brush | Short coats may need less frequent brushing. The AKC says many dogs do well with a few brushing sessions per week, while long coats often benefit from daily brushing. |
These tool examples and coat guidance come from VCA Animal Hospitals and its healthy-coat guidance. There is no single schedule for every small dog. Check behind the ears, under the legs, in the armpits, and around the groin, where tangles and debris can collect. If you are unsure which tool suits your dog, ask a veterinarian, groomer, or breeder.
When a bath is better than a spot clean
VCA advises that most dogs need an occasional bath, usually when the coat is dirty or has a “doggy odor.” For non-shedding dogs without health issues, it gives about six to eight weeks as a typical interval—not a fixed schedule for every dog. Coat, lifestyle, age, and health can change how often a bath is appropriate.

Before bathing, gently work out tangles: VCA notes that mats can become harder to remove after a bath. If matting is extensive, get professional grooming or veterinary help rather than cutting close to the skin with scissors.
- Use shampoo formulated for dogs; VCA describes fragrance-free hypoallergenic shampoo as a routine choice. Human and baby shampoos can be too harsh for dog skin, which differs from human skin in thickness and pH.
- Follow the product directions and rinse thoroughly. The AKC’s bathing guidance also emphasizes complete rinsing.
- If your dog needs frequent baths, or has irritated skin or a skin condition, ask your veterinarian how often to bathe and which product to use.
A white coat does not by itself establish a need for whitening shampoo. The cited grooming guidance supports dog-specific shampoo and coat-appropriate care, but does not establish that whitening products are necessary or effective for an individual dog.

Clean facial fur carefully
For ordinary debris near the eyes, use a soft cloth or damp cotton ball to gently wipe the corners. Do not rub the eyeball or apply a general coat product near the eyes unless it is specifically designed for that area. The ASPCA’s grooming tips advise veterinary attention for persistent runny eyes or discharge. Arrange a veterinary check if tearing or discharge persists, or if you notice redness, squinting, or discomfort. Tear overflow can stain facial fur, but a stain remover is not a substitute for checking ongoing symptoms.

Recurring odor, greasiness, dandruff, or shedding can point to an underlying problem, according to VCA’s coat and skin guidance. A dirty-looking white coat alone does not identify the cause of discoloration. If the change keeps returning or comes with skin irritation, ask your veterinarian rather than trying to mask it with repeated baths or stain treatments.
