Thailand’s “Three Whale Rock” is not a group of whales: Hin Sam Wan is a trio of sandstone formations in Bueng Kan Province that resembles a whale family when seen from above. The rocks sit within a recreation forest, where visitors can hike to them and take in views of the surrounding forest and mountains.

What are the Three Whale Rocks?

Hin Sam Wan, translated as “Three Whale Rock,” is a group of three sandstone formations in northeastern Thailand. The name comes from their whale-like outline: from above, the rocks appear to rise above the forest canopy like a family of whales. They are natural rock formations, not animals or a newly discovered species.

Thailand’s Forest Department places the recreation forest across areas of Mueang Bueng Kan and Si Wilai districts in Bueng Kan Province. The department lists the forest’s area as about 5,735 rai and describes the sandstone rocks as approximately 75 million years old. These are the agency’s stated figures; its listing does not identify a publication year or present a separate dating study.

How to see the formations

An official tourism listing says visitors can hike trails to reach the rocks, with views of forest and mountains along the way. The resemblance to whales is easiest to understand from above, but aerial photographs do not establish that visitors may operate drones at the site.
