Keep food, water, litter, a hiding place, and a familiar retreat accessible; expand the cat’s territory only as it begins to feel comfortable. Hiding or exploring mostly at night can be part of settling in, but illness or distress that is not improving warrants a call to a veterinarian.
Prepare a quiet home base before pickup
Ask the shelter what the cat is used to: food, litter, litter-tray style, bedding, medical history, and handling preferences. Familiar items and routines can make the transition less abrupt. You do not need a particular brand or a newly purchased set of supplies; ask whether the shelter can send familiar bedding or other items.
Choose a calm room with a door that closes securely. Before the cat arrives, check for hazards: secure cords and windows, remove poisonous plants and pest-control poison traps, and block gaps where the cat could become trapped. General pet-transition guidance from the ASPCA also recommends checking the home for hazards and using one room as a home base.
Set up the room with:
- Food and water in separate spots, away from the litter tray.
- A litter tray with familiar litter if possible.
- A comfortable resting place and a hiding place, such as a stable cardboard box.
- A scratching surface and a few safe toys.
- Familiar bedding or a blanket, if available.
A purchased hideaway is optional: a cardboard box can give a cat somewhere to retreat. Favor items that are stable, easy to clean, and compatible with what the cat already uses.

Bring the cat directly to the safe room
- Transport the cat in a secure carrier, ideally one the cat is already accustomed to.
- Take the carrier straight into the prepared room and close the door before opening it.
- Set the carrier down and open the door. Let the cat come out when ready; do not tip the carrier or pull the cat out.
- Leave the room quiet. Avoid greetings from visitors or opening the carrier in a busy hallway.
The carrier can remain in the room as another familiar retreat. Give the cat time to look around without pressure.
Build trust with quiet, cat-led visits
During early visits, sit at the cat’s level, speak softly, and let the cat decide whether to approach. Keep visits calm and predictable. If the cat hides, do not drag it out, crowd it, or block its escape route. A hiding place is useful because it lets the cat observe while feeling protected.

A very timid cat may wait until it is alone to eat or use the litter tray. Cats Protection advises moving the food bowl nearer the hiding place and leaving the room if the cat is too nervous to approach it. Keep essentials easy to reach, and continue offering low-pressure company rather than trying to force contact.
Let the cat’s behavior guide when to open more of the home
There is no single number of days that fits every cat. Keep the initial room available until the cat seems comfortable enough to explore. Then allow access to additional areas gradually, leaving the safe room open as a retreat. If the cat retreats or seems overwhelmed, make the space smaller again and give it more time.

Look for small changes over time, such as eating, using the litter tray, exploring, playing, grooming, or choosing to approach. These are useful signs of adjustment, not proof that every concern has passed. Cats Protection’s guidance is to proceed one step at a time and work at the cat’s pace.
Do not let the cat outdoors while it is still learning the home. Ask the shelter and a local veterinarian about identification and appropriate timing before outdoor access.

Introduce resident pets in stages
Do not put a new cat and resident pets together immediately. Give the new cat a separate sanctuary room first. For resident cats, Cats Protection’s Behaviour Guide 2025 recommends gradual introductions that begin with scent familiarity before controlled contact.
- Keep the cats in separate spaces so each can settle without being confronted.
- Allow them to become familiar with each other’s scent before arranging visual contact.
- Move to controlled visual contact, then closer contact only while both cats remain calm.
- Keep escape routes and elevated or hidden retreats available, and slow down if either cat appears distressed.
Do not use a fixed number of days as the measure of readiness; watch both cats’ behavior at each stage. With children, use the same low-pressure principle: supervise calm contact and make sure the cat can retreat without being followed.

Know when to ask for help
Hiding, avoiding people, eating only when alone, or exploring mainly at night can occur during adjustment. Contact a veterinarian if the cat seems ill or if distress is prolonged without improvement. There is no universal safe number of hours without eating or toileting established by the guidance cited here, so do not wait for an invented threshold: ask a veterinarian promptly about concerning changes, especially if the cat has a known health condition.
A shelter or qualified feline behavior professional may help with continuing behavior difficulties. If illness could be involved, veterinary evaluation comes first.
