A veterinarian usually starts by asking about your dog’s eating, drinking, behavior and bathroom habits, then performs a full physical examination. Common first-line tests include a complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistry, urinalysis and parasite testing. Further tests—such as targeted blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound or tissue sampling—are chosen according to what the examination and initial results suggest; most dogs do not automatically need every test.
What happens at the first appointment?
History: the changes you have noticed
Your veterinarian will ask when the weight change began and what has changed in your dog’s routine or health. Be ready to discuss food and approximate daily amounts, appetite, activity and energy, chewing or swallowing, vomiting or regurgitation, stool frequency and appearance, thirst, urination, medications, supplements, and parasite prevention or testing. These details help distinguish reduced food intake or difficulty eating from problems with digestion, absorption, metabolism or organs.
Before the visit, jot down recent measured weights if you have them, when you first noticed the change, what and how much your dog eats, and any changes in appetite, behavior, stool, vomiting, thirst or urination. Bring a medication and supplement list, along with parasite-prevention and testing history.
Physical examination
The veterinarian will examine your dog from nose to tail, listen to the heart and lungs, and feel the abdomen. The findings help guide which tests are useful next; weight loss alone does not identify a particular disease.
#1 Best Overall
- LARGE WEIGHING PLATFORM: Our widened and thickened dog scale measures 40.7“ x 20.9” (approx. 103.4cm x 53.1cm), breaking the size limitations of traditional dog scale for large breed. The pet scale easily accommodates small cats and medium-sized dogs while also meeting the weighing needs of large dogs and small livestock (sheep, calves, piglets). One scale covers both household pets and small farm animals
- MULTI-FUNCTIONAL: Our dog scale's tare function allows one-touch zeroing during weighing, directly providing your pet's net weight without manual calculations. The hold function locks readings before stepping off the animalscale, accommodating active pets for hassle-free recording and preventing repeated weigh-ins. The counting feature handles batch weighing of multiple young pets or small livestock, automatically tallying quantities
- PORTABLE DESIGN: A reinforced carrying handle is built into the side of the livestock scale body, allowing one person to lift it effortlessly without additional moving tools. This design of dog scale combines the practicality of a “large scale” with the flexibility of a “portable scale.” The back of the dog weight scale features a dedicated hidden accessory compartment for storing small items like the power adapter and manual, preventing loss while keeping the dog scale tidy and space-efficient when not in use
- DUAL POWER MODE: The dog weight scale supports dual power modes: battery-powered and AC adapter-powered. Both batteries and an AC adapter are included in the package. For stationary home use, plug it in to conserve battery life. When taking it outdoors or in settings like farms without outlets, simply insert batteries to start weighing, ensuring uninterrupted weighing needs.Large breed dogs adapts to various environments including homes, clinics, and farms
- HIGH PRECISION: The dog scale for large breed supports a maximum load of 1100 pounds with measurement accuracy down to 0.2 pounds. Its precise readings provide essential support for monitoring your pet's long-term weight. Suitable for all body types—from small cats to large dogs—it delivers reliable measurements every time
Which tests are commonly done first?
Common initial screening tests are a CBC, serum biochemistry profile, urinalysis and parasite testing. These tests provide clues and help decide whether further investigation is needed; an abnormal result does not necessarily establish a diagnosis by itself. VCA’s overview of testing for weight loss describes these common screening steps. The Merck Veterinary Manual emphasizes interpreting laboratory results in context.
| Test | What it can help assess | What a result means |
|---|---|---|
| CBC | Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. | Anemia or changes in white-cell patterns can point toward processes such as blood loss, inflammation or infection, among other possibilities; the CBC does not identify the cause on its own. |
| Serum biochemistry | Substances that provide clues about organs and metabolism, including liver and kidney values, glucose, proteins and electrolytes. | For example, increased glucose may prompt evaluation for diabetes; kidney-value or albumin abnormalities may lead to further investigation. |
| Urinalysis | Kidney function and signs of urinary inflammation, infection, protein or glucose. | Urine findings can help interpret blood chemistry, particularly when kidney disease or diabetes is being considered. |
| Parasite testing | A stool sample, often examined by fecal flotation for parasite eggs. | Ask the clinic whether it wants a sample and how it prefers you to collect it. |
Why might the vet recommend more tests?
If the examination and initial screening do not explain the weight loss, the veterinarian may recommend tests aimed at a suspected cause or body system. The choice depends on the history, examination and results so far—not simply on the fact that a dog has lost weight.

- Animal clinical refractometer for testing the health index of urine specific gravity and serum or plasma protein for animals.
- Triple scales: the left one is for testing urine specific gravity of large animals like dog, the middle one is for testing urine specific gravity of small animals like cat, the right one is for testing serum or plasma protein level for all animals.
- Measuring range: -total serum or plasma protein(SP): 2-14g/dl, - urine specific gravity of dogs(or large animals): 1.000~1.060RI, - urine specific gravity of cats(or small animals): 1.000~1.060RI
- Features automatic temperature compensation: makes it more convenient to use in different temperature.
- Quick and easy: Just need 2-3 drops of solution and a few seconds, you can get accurate readings. And no battery needed.
Targeted blood or urine tests
Depending on the clues, follow-up testing may include tests for Addison disease, trypsin-like immunoreactivity when pancreatic insufficiency is suspected, bile acids to assess liver function, or a urine protein/creatinine ratio. For suspected endocrine disease, the Merck Veterinary Manual describes a process that begins with history, examination and routine laboratory tests, followed by specific hormone tests selected to assess possible diagnoses. Weight loss by itself does not establish an endocrine disorder.
Imaging and sampling
Radiographs (X-rays) or ultrasound may be used to assess organs or investigate a suspected mass. If an organ or mass looks abnormal, the veterinarian may recommend a fine-needle aspirate or biopsy to examine a sample of tissue. These are possible follow-up steps, not routine requirements for every dog. Cardiac testing or infectious disease testing relevant to your region may also be considered if the history or examination points that way.

What does significant weight loss mean?
VCA Animal Hospitals identifies the loss of more than 10% of a dog’s normal body weight as clinically significant when fluid loss or dehydration does not explain it. The page’s publication date is not established. This is a reason to seek veterinary assessment, not a diagnosis or a threshold you should wait to reach. If your dog has concerning symptoms, contact a veterinarian even if the weight change appears smaller.

When your veterinarian recommends a test, ask what suspected cause it evaluates, whether it is a screening test or a more targeted step, what sample or procedure it involves, and how the result could affect the next decision. A clinic can also explain whether your dog’s particular history and examination make the test appropriate. If cost or scheduling is a concern, ask the clinic for an estimate and the expected sequence; there is no universal price or timeline established for this workup.
