- Brush in gentle strokes. Work through the coat without pulling hard. AKC advises gentle strokes down to the skin; stop if a knot resists rather than forcing the brush through it.
- Check with a metal comb. Comb through feathering and smaller areas after brushing. If the comb catches and pulls, do not drag it through the knot.
- Get help with a tight mat or discomfort. A tight mat or a grooming session that causes discomfort calls for individualized groomer or veterinary guidance, not a promise that a particular brush will remove it safely.
