Mudis need daily physical activity and mental engagement, but there is no single established time target that fits every dog. PetMD recommends at least one or two hours a day for exercise, mental stimulation, and training games; The Royal Kennel Club lists up to one hour per day for exercise. Those estimates cover different things, so use them as broad guidance—not a clinical prescription—and tailor the routine to your Mudi’s age, health, fitness, and recovery.
How much exercise does a Mudi need?
Published recommendations differ in both duration and scope:

These are broad breed-care references, not results from a study establishing a precise requirement. The Norwegian Kennel Club describes the Mudi as a high-activity breed that needs substantial physical and mental training, while the Mudi Club of America calls the breed very energetic and says it appreciates a good run.
Use the estimates as starting context. A healthy, conditioned adult that enjoys activity may need a different routine from a young puppy, a senior, or a dog recovering from illness. Watch how your dog responds during activity and afterward, and ask a veterinarian for individualized advice when health or discomfort is a concern.

What a balanced daily routine can look like
This is a flexible framework, not a tested Mudi schedule or veterinary prescription. Split activity across the day and make room for quiet rest, water, companionship, and brief opportunities to learn.
Morning
- Start with a toilet break, then offer a walk or an active sniffing and play session.
- If your dog is attentive, add a few minutes of varied, reward-based training.
Midday
- Provide a brief outing and a low-impact enrichment activity, such as a food puzzle or simple search game.
- Follow it with downtime rather than expecting the dog to stay active all day.
Evening
- Offer another walk, play session, or suitable training or sport practice.
- Choose an activity your dog enjoys and is physically ready to do; vary games instead of repeating the same drill for too long.
Scale back or stop if your Mudi seems uncomfortable or unusually fatigued. A veterinarian can help determine what is appropriate if you notice a recurring problem.

Exercise and enrichment for puppies
The available Mudi-specific guidance does not set a puppy exercise target by age. Avoid relying on rigid age-based minute formulas as though they were validated for this breed. Keep puppy activity brief and gentle, build in frequent chances to rest and toilet, and prioritize safe exploration, socialization, and short training sessions.
The Norwegian Kennel Club emphasizes socialization and environmental training for puppies and young dogs. The AKC’s general routine guidance includes exercise or enrichment, short training, rest, and bonding; it is not a Mudi-specific puppy schedule. Ask your veterinarian to tailor activity to your puppy’s development and health.

Mudi-specific sources describe a versatile dog that may enjoy different outlets. Options named by breed organizations include:
- Active play or running, when appropriate for the individual dog
- Herding
- Agility or obedience
- Flyball or frisbee
- Nose work and search games
The Mudi Club of America notes that individual dogs vary, and the Mudi Club UK suggests considering a local dog club. No source establishes that every Mudi should do a sport or that one activity is best. Choose safe, suitable options your dog enjoys.

Mental work belongs alongside movement. PetMD recommends training games and cautions against too much repetition; the Norwegian Kennel Club likewise highlights both physical and mental training. Short training sessions, sniffing, search games, and food puzzles can add variety. A puzzle toy is optional enrichment, not a substitute for outdoor activity, training, or companionship.

Age, health, conditioning, and individual response all affect what is appropriate. The AKC’s general exercise guidance says adult needs vary by breed, health, and energy level and recommends veterinary input for dogs with medical conditions. Use that as general context, not as a Mudi-specific duration standard.

The Mudi Club of America says a well-exercised Mudi tends not to get into trouble by jumping or digging around fences; the North American Mudi Alliance warns that a Mudi without daily activity may invent games such as digging or destructive behavior. Treat these as breed-club guidance, not promises about every dog.
