If your dog is nesting or treating a toy like a puppy, do not take the object away just to stop the behavior. Let her settle somewhere safe, offer an optional, calm alternative such as a short game or sniffing activity, and give her space if she guards her nest. Maternal behavior can occur with canine pseudopregnancy, but it cannot confirm that diagnosis; a veterinarian should assess concerning signs or possible pregnancy.
Why a dog may mother toys or build a nest
After estrus, a dog who is not pregnant may develop canine pseudopregnancy, also called false or phantom pregnancy. Nesting, carrying or mothering toys, restlessness, changes in appetite or activity, mammary changes, and sometimes aggression can occur. These signs are not enough to diagnose pseudopregnancy: true pregnancy and other causes may need to be considered. Merck Veterinary Manual explains that a veterinarian can use the dog’s history and examination, and imaging when indicated, to rule out true pregnancy: Merck Veterinary Manual: reproductive disorders of female dogs.
UC Davis describes pseudopregnancy as a normal physiologic process and says, “Most cases do not require medical treatment and will resolve with time.” Some cases do warrant veterinary care, particularly if milk production is uncomfortable or the behavior is troublesome. A veterinarian—not a home remedy or a fixed timeline—should guide decisions about treatment. See UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine: Canine Pseudopregnancy.
How to redirect her gently
Give her a quiet place to rest
Let her use a safe, calm resting area and avoid crowding it or repeatedly interrupting her nesting. If she is settled and the object is safe, there is no established reason to snatch it away. The available veterinary guidance does not show that abruptly removing a favored toy improves comfort or shortens pseudopregnancy.

Offer an alternative without pressure
If she is interested, invite her to a short game, a sniffing activity, or another calm diversion. PDSA suggests games and toys less likely to be mothered, including a filled KONG or similar treat-dispensing toy. This is optional enrichment, not a treatment for the hormonal cause. Consider whether she wants food, whether the treat suits her diet, and whether you can offer the activity without approaching a guarded nest.
Do not turn a toy into a confrontation
Some dogs may react aggressively when a person approaches a nest or an object they are treating like a puppy. If your dog stiffens, growls, snaps, or guards the item, stop approaching and give her space. Do not reach in, wrestle the object away, or punish the warning. Contact your veterinarian for guidance, especially if anyone could be bitten. The review “Maternal behaviour in domestic dogs” discusses aggression associated with approaching a nest or objects treated as puppies.

What to monitor at home
Keep an eye on her appetite, activity, comfort, mammary changes, and behavior. A simple record of when signs began and how they change can help your veterinarian assess the situation. Do not squeeze or try to empty mammary glands, or start medication or hormone treatment without veterinary direction.

Arrange an assessment if pregnancy is possible, your dog seems physically unwell, changes to her mammary glands concern you, or maternal behavior is severe or troublesome. Seek timely advice for marked distress or aggression. A veterinarian can evaluate whether she is pregnant, consider other causes, and decide whether treatment is appropriate. If she is guarding an object, keep people away from it rather than trying to take it from her.
