Neither a cat backpack carrier nor a stroller is best for every trail—or every cat. A stroller can reduce carrying effort on firm, smooth paths, while a backpack can go where wheels cannot. But wheels transmit bumps and noise, and a backpack moves with the wearer’s stride. Start by asking whether the outing is necessary and whether your cat can travel comfortably in the specific enclosure; the route and the cat’s fit matter more than the category.
Should you take your cat on a trail?
For an optional outing, first consider whether your cat benefits from going. Cats Protection advises against taking cats to unfamiliar places unless it is necessary for their health. If your cat does not willingly settle into an enclosure, buying new gear is not a reason to push on with a longer trip.
For necessary travel, a sturdy, well-fitted conventional carrier remains a sensible option. No available evidence establishes a universal winner between backpacks and strollers, a controlled head-to-head welfare comparison, or a safe ride-duration limit for either type.
How backpacks and strollers differ on trails

Choose based on your cat, route and handling needs
- Optional outing and a cat not comfortable with travel: Reconsider the trip rather than treating either carrier as a way to overcome the cat’s reluctance.
- Necessary trip with a smooth, firm walking approach: A stroller may be worth considering if your cat fits the closed cabin and its attachment, closures, airflow and brakes are suitable for the route.
- Narrow or rough route where wheels cannot go: A backpack may be easier for the person to maneuver, but choose it only if the individual cat has enough room, clear ventilation, secure containment and can tolerate the motion.
- Rough trail, uncertain fit, travel distress or rejection of both enclosures: Use a suitable conventional carrier for necessary transport. If travel remains difficult, ask your veterinary team for advice.
Check fit and security before setting out
Evaluate the actual enclosure with your cat and its bedding inside, not just the product’s stated capacity or a photograph. The cat should be able to lie down and change position; Cats Protection recommends ventilation openings on at least two sides. Confirm that the base supports the cat, openings and zippers close securely, and the stroller cabin stays attached to its frame. For a backpack, check that the wearer does not press against or cover the vents. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and confirm you can reach the areas that need cleaning.

If you add a cover or a familiar hiding option, preserve airflow and access to ventilation. A visible cat is not necessarily a comfortable cat, and being able to see the cat does not replace monitoring how it responds.
Get your cat familiar with the equipment gradually
Cats Protection recommends gradual carrier training, moving forward when the cat seems comfortable. FelineVMA conference proceedings likewise describe leaving a carrier open in a quiet, familiar place and pairing it with positive experiences.

- Leave the carrier open in a familiar, quiet area so your cat can investigate it voluntarily.
- Pair exploration with positive experiences, such as treats or meals, and let the cat set the pace.
- Build toward closing the enclosure and moving it only when your cat is comfortable with the previous step.
- Do not treat tolerance during practice as proof that your cat will enjoy a trail outing.
Cats Protection notes that a synthetic pheromone product may be one possible aid in carrier preparation; it is not a substitute for gradual, positive acclimation and is not established as a cure for travel anxiety.

Choosing a backpack or stroller for walking does not settle how to transport the cat in a vehicle. FelineVMA’s 2025 position statement recommends an appropriate, acclimated carrier secured on the vehicle floor behind the driver or passenger seat. It says: “If seat belts are used, they should only be used with carriers that are crash test certified.” A seat belt can crush an uncertified carrier, so do not assume a backpack or stroller is a certified restraint.

For outdoor outings, the CDC recommends supervising pets, keeping them in a carrier or on a leash, avoiding contact with stray or wild animals, checking for ticks afterward and asking a veterinarian about parasite prevention. Trail-access rules vary; check the rules and conditions for the specific place you plan to visit.
