Teach your dog that staying near you with a slack leash makes the walk continue—and brings rewards. Start indoors or in a quiet yard, reward the position and check-ins you want, then gradually practice around distractions. Everyday loose-leash walking does not require a strict competition-style heel.
Loose-leash walking is not the same as a formal heel
For an everyday walk, the goal is a dog who stays near you without pulling. Your dog does not have to maintain one exact position or watch you continuously. A formal heel is more precise and is commonly taught for obedience or rally; focus on it only if that is specifically what you want.
Set up a simple training session
Choose a quiet place and useful rewards
Begin indoors or in a quiet yard where your dog can focus. Have small, motivating treats ready, along with a leash that is comfortable and easy to hold. A lightweight six-foot leash is one option described in the AKC puppy-training guide, not a requirement for every dog.
A properly fitted harness can be a useful attachment option, particularly for a puppy, but it should not restrict movement or allow the dog to escape. A clicker is optional: you can also use a brief verbal marker such as “yes” to identify the behavior you are about to reward.

Pick a cue and mark the behavior
Choose a simple cue such as “let’s go” or “with me.” Say it as you start moving. When your dog comes alongside, stays near you, or checks in while walking, mark that moment with the click or “yes,” then give a treat. Michele Miller, CPDT-KA, puts the encouragement plainly in the AKC guide: “Your dog needs that jolly talk.”
Build the walk in small, successful steps
- Reward being beside you. Start with a few steps. Mark and reward when your dog is near you and the leash is loose.
- Reward check-ins. When your dog voluntarily looks back or reconnects with you, mark and reward. This encourages your dog to keep track of you without requiring constant eye contact.
- Practice turns. Use your walking cue or your dog’s name before turning. Reward your dog for coming with you and staying near through the turn.
- Keep early repetitions manageable. End or pause while your dog is still succeeding rather than waiting until they are distracted or pulling.
When your dog is comfortable in the quiet practice area, move outdoors. Keep the rewards worthwhile and add distractions gradually, starting with easier ones and increasing difficulty as your dog can manage them. This gradual approach is also recommended in the AKC hiking guidance.

What to do when your dog pulls
Make the leash’s slackness the condition that keeps the walk moving. If your dog reaches the end of the leash and pulls, stop or change direction rather than pulling back. When your dog turns toward you or returns and the leash slackens, mark and reward, then continue.
Forward movement is not the only useful reward. If your dog walks politely for a stretch and wants to investigate a safe spot, allowing time to sniff can reinforce that calm walking. The aim is not to suppress exploration; it is to teach that pulling does not get your dog where they want to go, while a loose leash does.

When routine leash practice is not enough
If your dog shows leash aggression, or you have a serious behavior concern, seek help from a qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional. The AKC leash-aggression guidance recommends enlisting an appropriate professional. Basic loose-leash exercises are not a substitute for individualized behavior support.
