Weakness, unusual behavior, wobbliness, shaking, collapse, or seizures need prompt attention. Offer regular food if your cat is alert and able to eat, contact your veterinarian immediately, and seek emergency care for collapse, seizures, or unconsciousness. Home first aid is not a substitute for veterinary treatment.
What low blood sugar can look like
Watch for new weakness or lethargy, unusual unresponsiveness or behavior, poor coordination or wobbliness, shaking or twitching, vomiting, collapse, seizures, or coma. In a cat treated with insulin, these signs warrant concern. They can suggest hypoglycemia but do not prove that blood glucose is low; other problems can cause similar symptoms. ( Cornell Feline Health Center; American Red Cross; VCA )
What to do, based on your cat’s condition
Alert and able to eat
- If you have a home glucose monitor and have been trained to use it, check the reading; do not delay help to obtain a reading.
- Offer your cat its regular food.
- Call your veterinarian promptly for advice, even if your cat seems better. A confirmed low reading without signs also calls for feeding and following your veterinarian’s long-term plan. (AAHA 2026 feline diabetes FAQ; Cornell)
Showing signs but refusing food
Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. The AAHA 2026 FAQ describes applying standard Karo syrup between the cheek and gums as first aid for a symptomatic cat that will not eat. Use it only in circumstances and by a method your veterinarian has directed for your cat. Do not syringe liquid toward the back of the mouth, and do not use sugar-free syrup. Veterinary guidance differs on which sugar products to use, so ask your veterinarian what to keep on hand rather than assuming household sweeteners are interchangeable. (AAHA; Cornell; Red Cross; VCA treatment guidance)
Seizure, collapse, or unconsciousness
Go to an emergency veterinary facility immediately. Do not try to feed or give oral medication during active seizure activity. Do not put fingers, food, or fluids into the mouth of a convulsing or comatose cat. Arrange transport without delaying it to try home sugar treatment. (RECOVER first-aid guideline; Cornell)

Why first aid is not enough
Sugar given before veterinary care may not adequately resolve life-threatening hypoglycemia, and severe cases may require intravenous glucose. Call for veterinary instructions and have your cat assessed even if signs improve. (RECOVER; VCA)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ask the veterinarian about the next insulin dose
After a suspected episode, ask the treating veterinarian whether your cat needs examination, glucose monitoring, or a change to its diabetes plan. Do not independently repeat, skip, or adjust insulin based on general advice; the veterinarian needs to assess the cause and decide what to do next. (AAHA; UC Davis)
