Many diabetic cats do well on a nutritionally complete, carbohydrate-restricted diet, and wet food may suit many of them. But there is no one best food or meal schedule for every cat: the right plan depends on weight, calorie needs, appetite, other health conditions, insulin treatment and household routine. Ask your veterinarian to choose the food and guide any changes to meals or insulin.
How to choose food for a diabetic cat
Compare foods with your veterinarian rather than relying on a “diabetic” label alone. A low-carbohydrate diet can improve blood-glucose regulation, but calorie density, body condition and other diagnoses matter too. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine says, “A diet low in carbohydrates has been shown to improve blood sugar regulation in diabetic cats.” The International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) consensus guideline supports restricted-carbohydrate diets while noting that further study is needed. Cornell’s feline diabetes guidance; ISFM consensus guideline.
Carbohydrate profile and calories
Restricted carbohydrate is commonly recommended, but the exact optimal amount has not been established. The 2013 ISFM panel suggested no more than 12% of metabolizable energy or 3 g/100 kcal pending further studies. That is a panel suggestion, not a universal prescription or a current threshold that every product must meet. Also compare calories: a low-carbohydrate food can still be calorie-dense, and the appropriate amount depends on whether your cat needs to lose, gain or maintain weight. ISFM consensus guideline; VCA’s guidance on treating diabetes in cats.
Wet or dry food
Veterinary therapeutic foods are available in both wet and dry formats. Wet food may benefit many cats and typically contains 70–80% water, but it is not mandatory for every diabetic cat. Consider the cat’s acceptance, calorie needs, medical conditions and the feeding routine your household can maintain. Cornell’s feline diabetes guidance; Cornell’s cat-feeding guidance.

Other health needs and food acceptance
Kidney disease, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease and other concurrent conditions can change which nutrient profile is appropriate. Choose a nutritionally complete food the cat will reliably eat; do not prolong food refusal to force a particular product. Cornell explains the importance of complete and balanced food, while VCA advises adapting diet to a diabetic cat’s overall health. How to plan meals and portions
Set a measured daily amount
Ask your veterinary team to set the daily food allowance and any weight goal. Measure portions consistently; VCA recommends a digital kitchen scale and a food diary recording the time and amount eaten. Keep a steady routine and continue the cat’s usual feeding frequency unless your veterinarian advises otherwise. ISFM says to feed at least twice daily; some cats can graze on a suitable diet, while measured allowances are especially important for overweight cats. Coordinate meals with insulin individually
There is no strong evidence that a particular meal timing or frequency prevents insulin-induced hypoglycemia. ISFM says a low-carbohydrate meal does not necessarily need to coincide with an injection, though some clinicians prefer feeding at injection time. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions for your cat’s insulin and circumstances; do not assume every cat must eat immediately before every injection. Cornell’s feline diabetes guidance; ISFM consensus guideline.
Plan ahead for missed meals and treats
Ask the veterinary team in advance what to do if your cat eats less than usual or refuses a meal. A missed meal may affect safety, but there is no universal instruction to skip, reduce or give the full insulin dose; get individualized advice. Discuss treats too: your veterinarian may include part of the daily ration or recommend suitable treats given at a consistent time. VCA’s guidance on treating diabetes in cats.

Food changes, weight loss and monitoring
Coordinate food transitions with the veterinarian because a change can affect diabetes management and monitoring. If weight loss is needed, it should be gradual, controlled and monitored; adequate protein and an appropriate calorie density matter. Track your cat’s weight, appetite, thirst, urination and food intake for veterinary follow-up. Cornell’s feline diabetes guidance; VCA’s guidance on treating diabetes in cats.
Some cats enter diabetes remission, but remission is not a cure, and insulin may be needed again. Do not stop or change insulin because of a food change or apparent improvement without veterinary direction. VCA’s guidance on treating diabetes in cats.

When to get veterinary help
Contact your veterinary team promptly if your cat will not eat or is eating substantially less than usual. If your cat is unwell, vomiting, very lethargic or showing possible signs of hypoglycemia, seek prompt veterinary advice. The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2026 guideline advises monitoring for clinical signs of hypoglycemia after starting insulin and seeking veterinary assistance urgently if signs occur.
