A 24-hour emergency vet visit usually starts with check-in and triage, followed by an examination and a discussion of next steps. The team may recommend tests, immediate stabilization, or hospitalization. The sickest pets are generally prioritized, so arrival order does not guarantee when your pet will be examined. Bring any records and medication details you can quickly access, but do not delay an urgent call or trip to gather them.

What happens during an emergency vet visit?

The exact sequence varies by hospital, but an emergency visit commonly moves through check-in, triage, assessment, and a plan. Staff may ask you to wait with your pet or take the animal to the treatment area for further evaluation, depending on the pet’s condition and the hospital’s workflow.

1. Call or check in

If you can, call your regular veterinarian or the emergency hospital before leaving. Your regular practice may direct you to a separate after-hours facility. For urgent concerns, keep trying until you reach a person who can give you directions; do not wait for voicemail or rely on online advice instead. VCA recommends being ready to describe what happened and checking the facility’s policies where possible (VCA emergency care guidance).

2. Triage comes before the full examination

Triage is an initial assessment to help determine how urgently a pet needs care. Cornell University Hospital for Animals describes a brief interview and possible baseline vital-sign checks by a veterinary student or licensed veterinary technician. Staff may ask you to remain with your pet or request permission to take the pet to the emergency area for assessment and possible initial stabilization (Cornell Emergency and Critical Care).

Because teams may be treating several emergency and critically ill animals at once, a pet who arrived later may be seen sooner if their condition is more critical. If your pet worsens while you wait, tell staff immediately. Cornell notes that delays can occur throughout an emergency visit.

3. The team takes a history and examines your pet

Be prepared to describe when the problem began, how it has changed, and any possible exposure to food, medication, toxins, or other hazards. At Cornell, staff gather a fuller history; a student may examine a pet who stays with the owner, and an emergency clinician reviews the case and performs an examination before discussing findings and recommendations. Other hospitals may use a different workflow.

4. Tests or stabilization may come before a complete plan

Depending on the case, the team may recommend stabilizing your pet and running diagnostic tests. VCA notes that an examination, X-rays (radiographs), and laboratory tests may be used before a plan or prognosis is developed. Ask what each proposed test is intended to clarify and how its result could affect the next decision.

5. Waiting, admission, or referral may follow

Some pets need continued monitoring, treatment, or tests in hospital. Others may need a specialist who is not on site, which can affect whether the hospital recommends waiting, admission, or transfer. Ask where you should wait, how the team will contact you, and what to expect if your pet is admitted.

What should you bring and tell the team?

Bring useful information that is readily available, but do not postpone urgent veterinary contact to collect paperwork or supplies.

  • Medical records and recent test results: The emergency hospital may not have access to your regular clinic’s chart.
  • Medication and health details: List current medications, known conditions, allergies if known, and relevant medical history.
  • A concise timeline: Note when signs started, how they changed, anything your pet may have eaten or contacted, and any home remedies already tried. VCA advises owners to be ready to answer these kinds of questions.
  • Contact and insurance information: Have your regular veterinarian’s contact details and any pet insurance card or policy information available. If time permits, check the facility’s payment policy.
  • Safe transport and containment: Use a leash or carrier when appropriate for the animal and injury. A VCA clinic asks visitors to keep pets leashed or in carriers; crates or carriers may also help with transport. Call for handling advice if moving your pet could worsen an injury.

For urgent cases, call the clinic and follow its transport instructions rather than delaying care to assemble records or buy supplies (VCA emergency care guidance; VCA emergency care for cats).

What should you ask the emergency vet?

These questions can help you understand the immediate priorities and what decisions may be coming:

  • Is my pet stable, and should I wait here or go directly to the treatment area?
  • What is the purpose of each recommended test or treatment, and how could its result change the plan?
  • Can you give me an estimate? Which parts are urgent, what options are available, and when will you need my consent?
  • If my pet is admitted, who will provide updates, when should I expect a call, and what are the visiting rules?
  • Is a specialist on site? If not, could care involve waiting for an on-call specialist, an overnight stay, or a transfer?

Policies differ. Cornell says its clients receive an estimate after examination and that permission is requested for continued treatment; in serious cases, stabilization there may begin with verbal permission. Confirm the process at the hospital treating your pet (Cornell Emergency and Critical Care).

What if your pet needs hospitalization?

Hospitalization can involve ongoing monitoring, tests, or treatment after the first assessment. Ask how often the team expects to provide updates, who will contact you if your pet’s condition changes, and whether you can visit.

At Cornell, emergency inpatients may transfer to a relevant specialty service within 24 to 48 hours and see a different veterinarian. That is Cornell’s process, not a general timetable for other hospitals. Ask the facility caring for your pet how it handles transfers and continuity of care (Cornell Emergency and Critical Care).

How much does an emergency vet visit cost?

There is no universal visit price established by the sources cited here. The total depends on your pet’s condition, tests, treatment, and whether hospitalization is needed. Ask for an estimate and clarify which services are urgent, what choices are available, and when the team needs your authorization. Also ask about the hospital’s payment policy and check what your insurance covers; do not assume a particular deposit, payment method, or price applies.

When should you contact an emergency vet?

VCA lists examples of signs that can warrant emergency care, including difficulty breathing, bleeding, vomiting blood, a painful swollen abdomen, suspected fracture, eye injury, loss of consciousness, seizures, sudden weakness, severe pain, difficulty urinating, and signs of heatstroke. This is not a complete diagnostic checklist. If you see a concerning sign, contact a veterinarian or emergency facility promptly and follow its instructions (VCA emergency care guidance).

How do you choose where to go?

When time allows, call to confirm practical details because hours and capacity can change. Ask whether the facility is open now, accepts your pet’s species and type of emergency, and has the necessary emergency or specialty capability. Your regular veterinarian may also be able to advise you on the referral route. If your pet needs ongoing care, ask how the hospital handles estimates and updates.
